New Player-- Combat Rules?

I was in Under Sigil, and I died trying to kill a bugbear. I then promptly respawned in a effort to kill the bugbear only to find that after I murdered it, another player was trying to kill it. This made the other player very angry and explained to me that this was against the rules. Having searched all over the forums/wiki I have not been able to find a post regarding combat rules. This post is not to put the other player out there, I am trying to efficiently learn the rules so it does not happen again. Most of the players I have adventured with know that I am a generally nice and laidback player.. I would like to keep that sort of feeling towards my other players.

It's not against the rules, if it was intentional and persistent behavior, you could make a case about griefing/harrassing, but that doesn't sound like the case in here, what it sounds to me is a misunderstanding.

There's kind of a notion about it in the Playing Online and Courtesy, but that's technically not rules. It's just general politeness matter.

If there was a rule that prevented one person from killing something that another is fighting, then I think nearly every single person playing the game online has broken that rule at some point.

Needless to say, this isn't something you should worry about unless there happens to be more to this story.

IC well, that could be, I suppose, understandable if the character is a hotdead, but if someone gets very angry OOC for a *gasp* BUGBEAR in UnderSigil, he must be a moron. A simple OOC talk could have cleared whatever your intentions were and I'm sure that within any 2 sensible (heck, not even mature) persons, it would be settled in a matter of... seconds? :blink:

As for if that's against the rules or not, to be honest I don't know, but what I know is that players have no business playing vigilante, or backseat DMing, enforcing rules is the DM's jobs, not the player's, if he had an issue with that and couldn't cope with a simple explanation (wow :rolleyes: ) he should have just contacted a DM to rule on the issue and left it at that.

EDIT: I just realized I assumed the other player was male, I'm so sexist noooooooooo.

I do not think there is more.. I tried to kill a bugbear, respawned, killed it, but didn't realize he was fighting another person. Person got very angry OOC.

OOC! .. At first it was like "Hey that was rude", and then I promptly responded "What? That was my Bugbear."

"You died, now it was my turn"

"I was here first, that bugbear was mine." etc.

Then he proceeded to chew me out for 'not reading the rules'. When I read the entire beginners guide and rules and saw no rules regarding this situation. However, this was not about me proving a point. I genuinely thought oh fudge maybe I should ask somebody about the rules, just so that I will not have a situation like this again.

Sounds like a minor case of over-reacting to me! But it's also not a big deal and no actual harm was done so. . . all's well that ends well! \ o /
