Stream of consciousness, I just say or do whatever immediately comes to mind.

No problem. After the latest patch, I simply checked out the servers, saw a Planscape one and thought 'Looks like my kind of server'. I saw a fair number of users online, I then came to this web site and that confirmed it. Well designed, with a basic set of rules that just tries to stop obvious stupidity without trying to police role play styles.

And I get an OK ping.

I've been playing single player NWN2, but not really going MP until now. Unfortunately I won't be around next week (working away) but I expect I'll still be on the forums with my netbook.

Two questions so far:

1) Are there many DMs on the server? I'm mainly thinking about weekends.

2) Is 'object fade' intentionally disabled on this server? Will it be coming in later? (I realise this is beta still).

Hmm. I shall have to get my old Planescape library down from the loft to bone up on the details.

This server is what I always imagined NWN could be like if only it hadn't been based on FR. I shall be sticking with this one for some time I imagine. Thanks, this is bloody marvelous! :)~

1) Yes, there are, though the problem is that sometimes we just want to play our own characters rather than DM. But hopefully we can get to do actual DMing more regularly.

2) I'm not sure what that means?

It is in the options. Fades out scenery obstructing your view. Works in OC and other mods but not in this world? Sorry, on mobile phone at the mo.

Hmn... I'm just arriving from a student party so, uhn...

I think you should have your nwn2.ini somewhere, perhaps in your documents slash neverwinter nights two, yadda-yadda. Well, you need find it in there somewhere. But, inside that .ini you really ned to find this one line: [Display Options], the brackets are fairly important too.

Nonetheless, add these things under it, or replace the values if they already exist:

ObjectFade Start=0.0
ObjectFade Length=0.5
ObjectFade Percentage=.01

Those are what I use, and things that obscure the view dissappear and the performance is improved slightly. But, honestly, I've not seen a lot of stuff getting in the way, so people night not need it unless they got a dodgy computerlaptopp like me.

My .ini files doesn't have a lot of empty lines, so if the same is for yours, I'd reccommed not to have those empty lines just for sure.

Hmn...

To me it always starts from the character build. I come up with an idea of a class or combination. I proceed to design the level progression, and then finally figure out who he or she is.

That's it in a nutshell.

Couldn't have said it better myself. :)

That's interesting.

I do it precisely the opposite way.

I start out with a character concept, then begin choosing classes depending upon what skills it seems like that character would have. I then level up depending upon what the character would have learned IC, or what it seems like the character needs to learn. I almost never create a character saying, "I am going to have a rogue x/sorc y/shadowdancer z" unless I am playing in a setting in which I start out with high level characters.

It does tend to paint you into a corner sometimes, and definitely leads to builds that are not the most efficient, but it feels a bit more organic. (Funnily, one of my favorite characters ever was "supposed" to learn to be a wizard, but never found an IC teacher, so he never did gain a single wizard level.)

Funny how that works...

All of these posts have been interesting, and I think that I agree with most of them at one time or another. It really just depends on my mood.

I can enjoy the "campfire" roleplay that goes on as long as someone is doing something interesting--whether that be palm reading, magic tricks, telling crude limericks...You name it. It's when people start talking circles about the weather that it starts to get boring.

But for me, the most exciting RP is that which involves character development, so I'm right there with Raneguin on that. Give me those fall-from-grace characters, the harrowing suicide missions, the farm-girls-turned-martyrs...

It's like an interactive novella, in which you actively craft the story with other writers. And like any good story, there should be conflict and a struggle for a resolution.

To that end, my "main" characters almost always are crafted with an ingrained set of problems to begin with, and I enjoy getting others involved in that experience as well as getting involved with their own characters' personal dilemmas.

So really, this all boils down to "giving cookies." If you want to have an enjoyable RP experience, then you can do so anywhere, in any situation, at any time. It's just a matter of using your imagination, and taking the initiative.

Hmm...my RP style is like a true meat eater, digging into a veggie burger for the first time. Hesitant at first, making his way into the gist of how to go about it. I add a little flavor to it, just because I know it's not going to be good without something spicy on it. I look it over a bit, determining the best way to go about devouring this thing as quickly as possible, and getting some enjoyment out of it. Then I take a bite.

Rough analogy, but if you've ever had a veggie burger and prefer meat, you'll know what I mean.

I'm an action player. I like lots of action. Why am I on a RP server? Well, because on an action server you get plenty of meat, but it's also not very healthy. With RP, you're going into a story, becoming a part of it, reading the other parts. Feeding your mind, without just mathematics and figuring out the best possible way to setup a build. Hey I'm guilty of that too, so I understand! You begin to determine (whether you believe this to be true or not) who your co-stars are going to be in your characters story. The viewpoint is multiple, from all ends, and you know that others are reading along, cheering for their hero, but trying to make their role impact others. So it becomes infectious, and you begin to just listen at times, and let the other actors play their parts. You then learn to adapt, and co-habitat on this stage giving the appropriate lines for the moment, and soon a part of you begins to feel for all the characters, not just your own, and you want to see the story play out...regardless of what that brings.

From personal experience, I've lost many a character permanently to the story. So I know for me, with my RP...it's all about story. Usually a good DM will reward your next character comparable exp, or slightly below, due to all the hard work put into the previous character and adding to the long-term story of the server, but in the end, does that even really matter?

So last bit. I used to measure experience by the bar. You know? That little blue thing in your character screen? Well, it's worthless. That's just a number, and it can be changed for hard work of adding to a story. So measure your experience by how much fun you had, and how much fun others around you have had.
