Correction: D&D was unbalanced before 5E. A LOT of consideration for balance was taken in the creation of 5E, as was the curtailing of ridiculous amounts of power at higher levels. We're at the mercy of 3.5E, which I would argue is the second least balanced version. (4E is the most unbalanced.) SCOD is also what one could consider a high level adventure. So, you do the best you can. And you try to avoid doing this:Tomekk,Jun 3 2016 wrote: D&D balance discussions generally end up going in circles, as the whole system is inherently unbalanced as a video game :P

Well PnP D&D has never been renowned for its balance. :D We've gone past four main editions with uber casters, interesting skill monkeys and flavorless grunts ...rapsam2003,Jun 3 2016 wrote: Correction: D&D was unbalanced before 5E. *edit* I forgot the 3rd where you could do any sick combination of the three to obtain a demigod. ("Pun Pun" i.e.)

That's not the question. The question is, "Should one be rewarded -- on a RP server -- for making a powerbuild/twink?". (NWN2 rewards you for powerbuilding by default, keep in mind.) And the answer should be a decisive no. Nothing should stop you from making a powerbuild, but neither should there be a reward. By rewarding those who RP with their class build, you're not rewarding the powerbuilders.Taihou,Jun 3 2016 wrote: What I sayed, was "Gish"/"Twink"/"Powerbuild" all three is pseudo-problem.
It is absolutely okay, that one can make them, because one SHOULD be able to make them. It is why building IS an NwN 2 or even DnD feature.
Heh, don't forget how games like Baldur's Gate 1 or 2 (which are based in 2E) allowed you to abuse the crap out of the F/M/T multiclass. That was more an issue where the game devs didn't balance that specific multiclass combo. However, the problem was, that combo wasn't even balanced in PnP. You could pretty much eschew the need for a pure Thief in PnP if you did F/M/T right. And thieves were so weak compared to other melee that you were often better off having someone multiclass as F/T or C/T or M/T.Godolia il Magus,Jun 3 2016 wrote: Well PnP D&D has never been renowned for its balance. :D We've gone past four main editions with uber casters, interesting skill monkeys and flavorless grunts ...

If you allow me, I'd reword the question as follows: is it correct to be able to play a character that, regardless of roleplaying or not, uses ploys which break the game's balance (despite being present in the same game from the start)?rapsam2003,Jun 3 2016 wrote: That's not the question. Simply answered, if there are methods to break an apparent balance (because there is not a perfect system and there won't ever be), it's good to try to reduce exploits to a minimum, mostly because most of them don't make any sense, and as for the rest, "the opportunity brings every man into thievery"; if there's something people can easily use to tell a "screw you" to the dms' work and to the players' fun, those are easy exploits and must be avoided.
Now I don't know what's exaggeratedly overpowered on SCoD, I shall leave this argument to dms and players.

Agreed, try not to fix what wasn't broken. Part of what makes even exotic melee characters viable on the planes is access to magic and items.Taihou,Jun 3 2016 wrote:

I can now cast some weapon spells, I've also been eyeing a few items that cast haste =)

What about Ceremorph's points leads you to believe that the idea of melee with wands/spells will be a thing of the past? I don't think the idea is to kill fun things, but the idea is to kill powerbuilds. "Twinks", as Altair said.Strawberry Jam,Jun 3 2016 wrote:Agreed, try not to fix what wasn't broken.
