Can they? For example, if I got something enchanted +4, can I get it later upgrade to +5? Or if I had +5 Hide & +5 Move Silently enchantment on armor, can I later upgrade to +10 Hide & +10 Move Silently?

They can be overwritten.... so long as you have a free enchantement slot left!

Example :

If you have a +1 +1d6 fire Longsword, you could turn it into a +5 +1d6 fire Longsword.
If you have a +1 +1d6 fire +1d6 cold Longsword, you CANNOT turn it into a +5 +1d6 fire +1d6 cold longsword.

So, if I had an Arcane Archer Chain Shirt, can I do the following?
  • +5 Hide
  • +5 Move Silently
  • +4 Armor
into
  • +10 Hide
  • +10 Move Silently
  • +5 Armor

No.

A) You have no free slot, since all 3 are taken.

B) The shirt can only take 1 new enchantment, and you'd better upgrade the AC before that.

Ok, the wiki just said "weapons had 3 free slots". I wasn't sure about armor.

So, I can upgrade the shirt to +5 then? I have a shirt with +4. Makes sense.

You can upgrade the shirt to +5, then slap something on afterwards, yes.

All items have 3 enchantable slots (except ones which already have more, of course), fill them up and its finalized. As long as you got 1 empty, you can upgrade the previous ones.

All right. Great. Now, Arcane Archer Shirt technically has 1 slot already filled, right? Because it has the spell True Strike 3/day. That's the case with all items like that, right? A spell fills a slot, correct?

Some items from the loot list can still be upgraded despite having 3 and in some cases 8 or 9 slots already filled. It's really hit and miss; some of them can be upgraded, but most can't.

And yes, /day or x charge spells on items fill out enchanting slots.

Did you ever discover Morthos whether the Arcane Archer Shirt was one of those items that allowed for more enchantments?

You can upgrade the armor before adding something else to it, yes.
