NOTE: I deleted the text within this post as I was expecting heavy flack from the some what negativity of the posts nature, so I'll summarize what what said to the best of my ability.

SUMMARIZED VERSION: So I felt a bit neglected due to lack of RP interaction when I attempted to engage others, but at the same time i kept a open mind on the situation thinking of all the possibilities to why they would't RP with some of my characters. So I made this post in the attempt to find out why and how to fix this lack of player to player interaction from others.

In my experience it depends on your character's race. Have to say it but folks tend to avoid RPing with non-humanoid monster races esp. if you RP evil. I found it rather had to RP with an illithid and an ogre mage, but as soon as I tried a dragon (shapechanged into humanoid) and an actual human things got much 'easier' (which is subjective, because there's lots of variable factors in each character kind).

Can't really put my finger on why that is...

Hello. I am currently taking a break from the server so I cannot speak to the current state of affairs. However, in my experiences there are few people who actually avoid interacting with others in a general sense.

I know that my character, Aleis, specifically avoided interacting with fiends but was generally open to anyone else. Some characters are like that, in that there are certain groups that they either oppose or want nothing to do with. Maybe your character falls into some such category?

On the other side of things, it's also entirely possible that people are tabbed out (rude!) or occupied by things which have dragged them away from the keyboard (like a toddler or a kid). I have nothing but sympathy for you in this case. When I was on Second Life one of the rules for a Sim that I was on was that if you went AFK you had to had to toggle yourself as such, that way other people would know whether or not you are available to interact with. I try to do this myself as much as possible, but there are times when certain emergencies pop up and I have to skedaddle.

Regardless of the actual cause, I do hope that you find the RP you're looking for and are enjoying yourself! n_n

(and yes, this is the correct board for this thread. ^^)

A good question, and worth a few considerations. Obviously people are going to gravitate towards the people they know, particularly on an almost 10-year old game like this, but the majority of people are willing to give newcomers a chance.

1. What is your character? If you come stomping up with something big and evil and are all "grrrrr I'm a badass", well... it could be a while. But I'm going to assume you don't do this.
2. Player merchants are a great way to get things started. They want to talk to you to make money, but they're also generally among the more outgoing players; you have to be to sit in front of a shop for four hours doing nothing but talking to customers!
3. Sigil is a confusing place, and newcomers are going to need to ask questions! A great icebreaker is simply catching someone with a "can you answer a question for me"... whether it's "I hear there's a portal to the beastlands but I can't find it" or "I'm looking for someone who knows this thing, maybe you can help me".
4. Make sure you use the inspect option! A lot of people will put info into their bios to serve as a hook for RP. Information about their past ("You're from Krynn? So am I!"), about their faction ("I see you're wearing a Fated badge. Could you tell me about your faction?"), or simply about their appearance ("I couldn't help but notice that you're rather tall for a kobold"), a lot of times that first hook is what leads to fantastic RP
5. This is the Ceremorph special. Don't linger and expect others to approach you! Be outgoing and make the first move. And if DMs or EMs are around, don't hesitate to approach them with technical or even silly questions, but also realize that almost all of them are players as well, and for the most part are also IC part of, or even head of, large groups and won't hesitate to invite an interesting character concept or someone who displays the potential for good RP
6. Don't be discouraged! Every server has people who aren't going to respond: the insular group of friends who only want to RP with each other, the person who only wants to grind their character to 30 ASAP, or the person who stands their character in the busiest spot on the server and then goes AFK for 3 hours. But there's players to be found.
7. Another surprisingly great way to meet new people is adventuring. Let slip in the bazaar that your low-level character is going to run through Undersigil or Brux, and there's a good chance, especially if things are slow, someone is going to pipe up with "I've got a 3rd-level character who needs to level! Hang on while I switch!"

A couple things actually. The more exotic a character, not only is your RP more challenging, but so is that of others interacting with your character. What do a group of humans and elves have to say to a mind flayer or a troll aside from "kill it with fire"?

Fiends and other obviously evil things also make for a challenge, simply because evil is evil. If you're truly RPing your character and they don't have an Int of 4, you realize the friendly succubus or erinyes doesn't really want your friendship, they want your soul. This is even moreso if you let yourself fall into the "brooding evil badass" trope, because... yeah, nobody wants to talk with your brooding evil badass. Sorry!

These characters are probably best if you already have a support group who will roll new toons that fit well. And even that has a good chance to open things up, because while a troll stomping around the bazaar is "who let the monster think it's people", on the other hand a group of a troll, a troglodyte, and an Oni chatting in the bazaar and talking about their last adventure is a bunch of cutters and bloods just like the rest of us.

We've currently got an IC alliance going of a bunch of evil/monstrous characters if that was the case Dafty. Just put the word out if your PC is interested in game and vizier or one of the others will find you to make an offer.

Thank you all for your response. I actually expected a lot of heat from others just from the nature of the post being negative in a way :P

but the PC im playing the most isn't Evil or anything of the likes, but reflecting on the situation with alot of advice from all of you it could be my concerns where linked to irl stuff or others in a hurry to get to point A to point B perhaps. but all the same i'll take all the advice I can get to get more interaction from players.

Thanks again to all of you

From my experience people who roleplay their characters as, well, non-suicidal or asking for being shafted tend to RP distrust towards the characters who look monstrous or evil.

This even includes more comely fiends. A thinking character won't be carefree with a succubus or an Erinye just because them fiends got a nice pair of assets and a hourglass-shaped body.

But of course monstrous characters who are made with roleplaying a more "beauty and the beast" concept where the character is non-evil are given a short stick because they look like the rest of their usually evil species, so others are wary about them.

Shapeshifting monsters obviously have breaking the first ice easier for them. They can simply hide what they are for the first contact.

Making things harder as it is, I honestly prefer this situation over the one where someone expects from a fiend to try to redeem herself or have any glimpse of good inside...

It just takes some more time to get others to know that the character is monstrous only on the outside.

A rather interesting approach you have on playing fiends, and I have a hard time doing the Evil or fiendish nature stuff in character... I have a habit of making my characters too nice eventually out of habit and the evil/fiend doesn't last long before the other side comes out haha.

Anyhow the information which I'm needed in the same context of your post. So thanks

Also I'm gonna fix my first post now that I have time to do so.. with a brief review on what I deleted due to me expecting heavy flack from others, which did not happen.

Most ah tha ice breakin ah done on characters was in tha hunting areas on tha server. When folks meet like tha some sorta RP tenda ta happen fer tha sake ah gropuing together. Gives ya ah reason ta be talkin wit other palyers. Then after ya end up runnin round wit folks ah bit fightin stuff ets easier ta approach them when ya meet in tha Bazaar er somethin.

While characters wouldn usually jus walk up ta ah big scary thing on tha streets ah tha city.. they sure don mind havin tha big thing on their side if there's fightin ta be done.

An though some folks balk at tha idea tha RP could POSSIBLY happen while yer out fightin stuff.. there's lots ah good RP going on while folks er huntin were rats er out in tha abyss. Ya don gotta jus wait till yer standin round in tha city lookin all cool an menacin fore ya can RP wit folks.
