You can't stack the same effect on the same item. At least not from the same kind of effect (you can put + AC and + AC vs evil on the same item, for instance. Or +magic damage and +magic damage vs evil. Although naturally, only one of those effects can function at a time, and you'll get the best applicable to the thing you're fighting).

And just in case you wondered, you can't stack the same damage type on a weapon either. The highest replaces the lower tier version.
