lets see.
ranger gets hips at level 17 I think and it ONLY works in areas that or outside so its like wuss hips.
Assassin gets Hips at level 8. They also get a death attack which stuns folks. Along with sneak attack damage. With a few use per day spells.
Shadow dancer is a great hips machine though requires 2 feats. Dodge, mobility.
Many people take 1 level of shadow dancer due to most of what they offer sucks or is redundant.
If it was me I have often pondered a fighter/rogue/assassin/swashbuckler build.
rogue 10 so can get epic precision (means your sneaks work on everything those immune take half damage).
swashbuckler so you get free weapon finese and int does damage, then take combat insight to do double int to damage.
Fighter to make up for crappy ab and get feats.
Assassin would figure 8 levels.
rogue 10/assassin 9/ fighter 8/ swashbuckler 3
and hin so you get more perks and hidings ability.

I really like going SD 2 if you don't have any other rogue levels. Give SD's Evasion AND uncanny dodge, which is key, especially in the Abyss. Assassin is just an awesome class, so you can't go wrong there. Never was a ranger fan, mainly due to low AC.
My advice, as always: Play what you love.

I'd think more on these basis: What do you want your characters role in party be? Flanker/Tank/supporter/blaster caster/healer... etc.
It's kinda easier to determine what you want to use as classes after you know what you want them to be able to do :P what's the characters sole purpose?

As a shadow dancer that character should at least know how to summon his shadow buddy... taking only one or two level of shadow dancer only is just butchering the class...
That said, I vote for assassin, always fun.
Mobility is useless when you have tumble...

*shrugs* each their own.
some people frown on hips some do not . their choice.
besides some of my characters with SD can summon shadows :P wizard style.
most of what the class offers is rather weak or low duration and redundant unless a class that has to wait till level 18 to take it.

most of my builds start with "Can I do this" or "does this work". Few are this is the character here is a build to match it. Its backwards form some.
while ranger does have wuss hips it does have nice perks extra damage/skills against prefered enemies also bane of enemies giving a +2 and 2d6 damage. Plus if you take TWF and go 21 levels you can be a strength based fighter with PTWF on weapons.
what is dipping?
Perhaps tell what you want the character to do or be? or personality?
