Herbert's creator, Friterg, created him as an insurance policy. His brother, had traded his soul to a devil in disguise during a particularly drunken card game. Upon learning of his brother's plight Friterg made a deal with the same devil for the return of his brother's soul. Ultimately though, this deal involved the trading of his soul for his brother's. The devil being a devil did indeed return the brother soul, but he gave it back trapped in a crystal and a year before he collected on Friterg.
Feeling slightly cheated, Friterg developed an insurance policy for the eventual loss of his soul. He contracted some followers of Gond to assist in the building of a golem. Upon it's completion Friterg took his brother's soul stone and planted it inside the golem for safe keeping, and left the golem the following instructions:
When you awaken immediately proceed to read every book you can in my library.
After you have read every book, travel to Sigil using the map and key provided on my end table.
Once you arrive in Sigil, find me and report for further instructions.
Friterg placed placed a spell on a dead-man trigger to awaken the golem. Once he died the golem awoke and began to read. Unknown to Friterg, the soul of his brother leaked one special trait to the golem, the ability to learn, and after six years of reading, he was a particularly slow reader, the golem moved to the second instruction and began to look for Sigil.
Once he found Sigil he began his search. As he wandered around the market area a peculiar, short and green skinned lady said hello which sounded something like: "Please don't step on me."
The golem apologized and when she asked his name, the golem paused, no one had ever asked him that before. He thought of all the names he had read about in the library and picked the one he liked the best.
