I could barely keep upright, so I pretended to lean back against the wall nonchalantly, hiding the weakness that now consumed my body. I hadn't slept since I had returned to Sigil, but I swore I would not miss her again! She found me first, her questions of course beginning at once. She slowed after I turned to face her, my weak smile and haggard face belied my condition. She paused before taking my arm and leading me to the Inn... up the stairs, and in front of a familiar portal.

Elysium.

Calmly, affectionately??, she guided me through, where we saw other beach goers, and decided it was best to sit on the hill and enjoy the view. Again she questioned my whereabouts, though slower this time, and patient, suggesting I might lie down and rest while she kept watch. I waved her off, but told her it was just a path I must walk alone... demons inside that I could not make peace with.

My hands found hers and I took one and, with her palm open, traced the scar that ran beneath my tunic, before I let it rest on my heart. I let her feel the pulse, the beat, the melody, the warmth... everything that was me in the purest sense.

It was then her eyes found mine, a deep blue in contrast to my own bright green, she mouthed quietly "Ly-ra missed you." I offered her a weak smile as I replied, "I came back for you." That seemed to catch her a little offguard as she blushed, ever so slightly.

"Ly-ra is... glad." was the last thing I saw her say, before with a warm smile, I drifted off to dream.

For the first time since the darker days of old, dare I say... I was at peace...?

Peace does not stay long. It is fleeting, like that of a sparrow upon a fierce wind.

As I stepped through the portal and into the woodland set before me, my path was torn. Why did I come back? I'd returned to the forest of Neverwinter months ago, but for some reason decided to travel back to Sigil.

Why, was the question I would continue to ask myself as I placed one foot in front of the other. My hands instinctively went to draw the cowl of my cloak up as I stepped into the shadows of the city. Khaz, my only companion, my only true friend, padded softly behind me as we made our way through the winding streets.

.....

I slowly made my way to the Hive Ward... perhaps she might be at her parlour doing work? I waited for some time, still wrapped in the shadow of the buildings above.

*FOOL! You know there is nothing left for you here, why do you torture yourself so?*

My subconcious voice cracked like a whip, sending my thoughts reeling in disarray. My hands gripped my blades as I tried to control my mind, tried to grasp some semblance of thought and balance.

Frustrated.., angered.., saddened... I knew what I must do.

Turning to Khaz I whispered softly in elven "It's time to hunt."

Memories shall forever haunt me. Cold sweats, pangs of guilt, tears of regret.... all moments that do not diminish as time goes on.

She sent me a letter. Nothing extravagant, no affection... simple and mundane. Should I expect something more? I'm almost surprised she wrote me at all, save for the fact she wants something. Would she have tried to contact me had she not wanted something?

Hardly a chance.

She's happy, content. Anyone can see that... well, anyone who knows her from Jezabel.

The shadows have been some of my closest friends these long years. I still cling to them like a newborn to its blanket. They hold me close and caress me, like a loving mother, and together we watch everything around us unfurl.

A lone berk passes within feet of the shadows that cloak the night of Sigil. He pauses momentarily to look at something. From deep within the shadows comes a low growl.

People in the bazaar would say the berk was mad, coming around the corner wide-eyed and yelling about a large black panther and a cloaked and hooded man. Others would say he'd only stumbled on the ranger and his companion because the elf had wished it.
