Background:
Vaggol'cyth Krahl comes from Iylea. The distant prime is a torrid, harsh world with an overly bright sun. The climes of Iylea range from humid swamps and jungles to scorching deserts and plateaus. Vaggo resided mostly in the Empire of Vuhkulaa, a land of order with a militaristic bent ruled by exceptionally intelligent orcs. Unfortunately for much of Iylea, the intelligence of the orcs of Vuhkulaa also led them to extreme forms of cruelty and tyranny.
As the parents of a tiefling in Vuhkulaa, Vaggo's parents had three choices: give their son to the Church of Knowledge and Hegemony as an infant, pledge him to the Potentate's Army, or see him die. This same choice was given to all other parents of tiefling children. (Although, marriage into a lesser noble house might be a choice for the parents of beautiful tiefling females.)
Vaggo's parent pledged him to the military.

At the age of six, the recruiters came. Recruits were given basic education in reading and writing, tactics, history of Vuhkulaa, the Planes and the outsiders summoned by the orcish Conjurer-Lords, etc. Recruits were also expected to attend mass at the local chantry temple.
Vaggo, as a lithe, wiry child was assigned to the Sappers Corps. In defiance of the Church of Knowledge and Hegemony, the Sappers Corps long had a tradition of worshiping Sung Chiang, a god of thievery and deception, in secret. It was a common initiation ceremony to be introduced to the worship of this dangerous Power. The lords of the Potentate's Army were aware of this heresy, but the Sappers also were considered irreplaceable. Vaggo grew up with knowledge of traps, poisons, and seige warfare, trained in a harsh but fair form of justice which the sappers employed in their own ranks. At the age of majority, the tiefling was shipped to the front lines.

The Empire of Vuhkulaa's latest war has lasted three decades. The small but impenetrable Kingdom of Lyntaesia, populated by several million elves, half-elves, and aasimar, had insulted the previous Potentate. (The actual nature of the insult was a source of much rumor among the Sappers.) The strength of Lyntaesi was its faith in the goodness of Celestial Hebdomad, worship of the Court of Stars, and the auspices of the Seelie. This free-spirited nation had long been a source of envy for the Vuhkulaan lords, minor conflicts spanning back centuries.
The battles between Vuhkulaa and Lyntaesia were brutal, honorless affairs. Both sides had long since ceased to give quarter. Of particular torment were the he orcish Conjurer-Lords' elicitations of Efreet, Kytons, and Yugoloths. In response, the mages and priests of Lyntaesia summoned guardinals and devas. The magical and martial clash of Outsiders caused innumerable causalities. This was the calamitous war into which Vaggo's unit of Sappers was thrust.

About the Church of Knowledge and Hegemony
Nestled into the heart of the Empire of Vuhkulaa, the Church of Knowledge and Hegemony, aka 'Hegemony', demands obedience and adherence to its teachings. Local power is maintained through the chantry temples, congregational buildings dedicated to the Powers that Hegemony countenances and overseen by the Magi. Provincial power is kept via the Crystalliums, large temples of black crystal ruled by the Bishops of Hegemony. Imperial power resides both in the High Executor's Palace and the Potentiate Edifice, where the Bishops and the High Executor advise the Potentate, ruler of the entire empire. Although the Potentate has the power to overrule the edicts of Hegemony, few Potentates have ever done so.
The Church of Knowledge and Hegemony preaches worship of Graz'zt, Demogorgon, Mydianchlarus, Hecate, the Vaati, Siva, and Kali. According to Hegemony, these were the only proper Powers to worship and revere, that all of them were in opposition to each other, and to die was to enter one of these Powers' realms. Profane rituals are practiced in every chantry, with greater rituals practiced in the Crystalliums. Magi and bishops are both male and female, but the vast majority of them are orcs of Vuhkulaa blood.
