Backstory
It was with great difficulty and greater perseverance that Bran Han, the illustrious halfling mage, finally found what must have been the only copy left in Toril, and possibly outside of it, of Amazing Travels beyond the Realms. Long thought to be a fiction novel, the old book was rumoured to have, encrypted within the words of an extraordinary story, the well guarded secret spell of Planeswalking, that is, to magically travel from one plane of existence to another.
The old mage had a young niece with ruby red hair named Naemi, who had been known to always confuse the two words abandoned and unattended. In her mind, any object left "unattended", whatever its commercial value or magical properties, was therefore to be considered "abandoned", and by extension "hers to take". This innocent misunderstanding of the common tongue, along with any notion of other people's property, had been known to get the young halfling in a great variety of embarrassing situations. Yet none had ever been as bad as the time she snatched the crown jewel from a powerful warlock's prized collection, the Legendary Loop of True Foresight. As she slipped the pretty ring on her tiny finger, the red-haired hin was magically wisked away into her own future, where she had the unfortunate misfortune of being burned to a crisp by the wrathful warlock's combustion spell. Horrified at this ghastly prospect, Naemi sought her uncle's advice. After hearing her story, the old hin asked : "But why did you still take the damned thing, after seeing what would happen ?!" To which she simply shrugged and gave a worried smile.
Deeply concerned, the mage had search heaven and earth for a possible means of escape from the wrath of the powerful warlock. But he knew the man would always find his little thief, anywhere in the world, and that there was no place for her to hide... no place in Faerun that is. And so the mage spent months studying the old book, and ultimately discovered its well hidden secret mystery spell. He and his sticky-fingered niece transported away to Sigil, the City of Doors, where he knew they would be safe.
Naemi promised her uncle that her days of thieving were most definitely behind her, and that from now on she would ask permission out loud before taking something that wasn't hers.
