Daughter of the Ghostwise Halflings, native to the deep caves of Chondalwood, her mother dies shortly after her birth and her father decides to journey east with his young daughter, as a traveling merchant along the Silk Road stretching from Dhaztanar in Semphar (eastern Faerun) all the way to Yenching in Shou Lung (western Kara-Tur). Kaeris grows up as a nomad, enjoying the diversity of cultures between the two worlds, until her father falls ill and she is forced to sell most of their valuables for medicine.
Ruined and desperate, she meets a shady sorcerer named Kalimvaar who promises her to save her father from death in exchange for a simple job way out in the Dry Steppes of the Hordelands. All she has to do is retrieve a gemstone from an ancient tomb in the desert. This tomb is guarded by a dreadful dark knight known as Kith Zerath. Kaeris could never in a million years even dream of defeating such an opponent in combat. She does however manage to strike a bargain with the undead knight. He agrees to break his sacred oath of guarding the tomb if she defeats his greatest enemy from when he was alive, the great centaur desert tribe chief known as Sungaar, and bring him back one of his ears as proof.
Having never been, nor ever wanted to be, an assassin, Kaeris decides to meet the half-man-half-horse and ask him to kindly lend her one of his ears. Touched by her tale and impressed by her courage, Sungaar agrees to give her the freshly cut ear of one of his recently deceased tribesmen. Bringing the ear back to Kith Zerath, the death knight releases as agreed the tomb to Kaeris and she manages to retrieve the precious gemstone. But as she pockets it, Kith reappears before her, furious, suddenly aware of her deception. He punishes her by marking her with a powerful everlasting spell of decay, turning her skin and eyes ashy grey and severely weakening her body. Barely escaping with her life, Kaeris returns to Kalimvaar with the gemstone. But now the evil sorcerer proclaims he had never actually agreed to "heal" her father. Instead, he curses the dying halfling with an eternal slumber spell, this way he will never die, but nor will he ever live again. Considering their agreement honored he snatches the stone from Kaeris' fingers and vanishes in a cloud of smoke.
Having lost everything, fortune, family and health, the grey hin wanders feebly along the Silk Road, begging for food, until Ugarth, a half-orc monk from Kara-Tur finds her and decides to take her under his wing. He teaches her "The Way" and his techniques of martial combat from which she gains fortitude and the ability to resist the effects of the decay spell by channeling her body's inner energy known as the ki. Years pass as she perfects her martial skills and Kaeris grows to become a powerful monk. She finally decides to seek out Kalimvaar and confront him. Upon her quest, she discovers the sorcerer has moved to Sigil, the city of doors.
That is where her destiny will take her and, by all the gods, she will find this wicked man and she will force him to reverse the spell he cast upon her father, so that the old halfling may at long last die in peace.
