Melissa is a prime born on Toril. She lived a pleasant, albeit poverty-stricken life in Waterdeep up until the age of six, when she first awakened her sorceress powers. The result was an explosion of power that burned down her family's house and killed both her parents, leaving only her unscathed. She was forced out onto the streets, where she finally learned to control her powers and used them to steal food when necessary and evade the guards. She founded a sort of safe house for a small group of fellow orphans and street children. However, her deeds eventually caught up to her as she was finally caught by a guard who had taken a particular disliking to her. He threw her into a dark cell, leaving her to rot.

However, she was rescued by a priestess of Sune who was guided by visions. She was taken to the Temple of Beauty and given food and bedding with no strings attached. However, she quickly took a liking to the priestesses and Sune's teachings, and she became a priestess-in-training at the age of ten, becoming a full priestess only two years later. Although she would normally be too young to be a priestess, her sisters in faith knew that this was necessary, for Melissa was not long for that world.

The Selena family, for as long as their history was recorded, has been stricken by a terrible, incurable illness affecting all women in the family. Many rumors circulated regarding the cause, from affairs with dragons to deals with dark gods. Regardless, the illness had several consistent symptoms. The most benign were turning the victim's eyes red and hair white, and providing an immense boost to their innate spellcasting potential. However, once their potential was unlocked, they were constantly stricken by an agonizing pain, which increased with age and spiked when using magic. Worse, the lifespan of Selena women was decreased to between eighteen and twenty-five years, depending on how much of their magical prowess they used. This eventually led to Melissa being the last of the Selena line.

Melissa left the Temple of Beauty shortly after becoming a full priestess, and wandered up and down the Sword Coast. She developed her powers at an astonishing rate as well as learning alchemy. She created a number of numbing agents to allow her to live and cast spells without being in constant pain. By the age of seventeen, she finally settled down and met the love of her life. However, she sought to end the family curse by *redacted*. In order to accomplish this, she created a tenth circle spell that would *redacted*. However, casting the spell caused irreparable damage to *redacted*. The only thing that saved her was *redacted*. As a result, she was sent to Sigil, albeit with only fleeting memories of her former life. Fortunately, she was cured by this process, although stripped of her sorceress powers.

Though forced to start over, Melissa quickly became an adept planeswalker, choosing to walk the path of a Theurge, learning both arcane and divine magic. She made many allies, becoming reasonably well known among fellow planeswalkers as a very kind and loving spirit and an excellent healer. She elected to join the Sensates out of a desire to gain a further appreciation for different kinds of beings and how to best spread love and beauty.

Additional notes: A memory stone of the casting of Melissa's tenth circle spell resides in the Sensate's restricted section. However, it is unlikely anyone who learns the spell from the stone would ever want to cast it, due to its extreme material requirements.

Personality:
Melissa is kind and polite to everyone, even beings who she should, by all rights, loathe. She holds very little preconceptions about other races, choosing to treat them based on their actions rather than their heritage. However, some particularly evil creatures may naturally avoid her, as she gives off an aura of kindness that they may be repelled by. She carries an unwavering smile, and those who know her recognize that if she is ever not smiling, something is seriously wrong. She is also very charitable, often offering guidance to others, particularly people new to Sigil.
