~The Decision: A New Life~

Kefalee smiled to the elven woman next to her in bed, running her hand through Nilme's hair gently before standing up. The dark-skinned woman couldn't sleep, she had too much on her mind, but she had come to a decision.

The warrioress carefully climbed out of bed, being very careful not to awaken the elf, and put her skirt and top on. She opened the door to the dining area of the room the two of them shared in the inn and picked up a small item, a chainless pendant in the shape of a golden heart. Kefalee had left it there the night before, as a reminder.

She held it in her hand for several moments before wrapping her fingers around it, bringing the hands and the pendant up to her forehead, and closing her eyes. In elven, the woman began praying softly.

"Lady Goldheart, please hear me...I've been without a focus and a path for a long time, and you have given me one in the form of Nilme. As I live for her, and to care for her and keep her happy, so I will live to spread your word and your love if you will have me...

"I don't have a lot to say, I'm not a woman of many words. But if you will have me...If you can hear me...I'll be there for you too. I will serve as a champion for you...If you will have me."

~The Banishment Scroll: A Little Piece of Home~

Kefalee was awake bright and early, as usual. She looked out over the bazaar from a spot in the alleyway next to the inn before looking down at her hand. The gold heart pendant hadn't left it in a few hours. She needed a chain for it.

The time seemed to crawl. She was nervous about several things, worried about others. Kefalee stood out of sight to most, dressed in Harmonium armour, but too unsure of her own feelings to go out on duty yet.

She had met a woman who wished to know about Amaku, about "the seducer." Kefalee had told Zilvai that there was not much more to say; Amaku had realized the error of her ways and changed, as far as the Serkh knew.

She had her doubts still about Amaku, but for the moment at least, Amy seemed to be doing much better, and had fully let Nilme go. Kefalee and Nilme had agreed to be her friend, as that was all Amaku really wanted in the first place...That, and to help Nilme. It just turns out...It didn't work out as well as had hoped.

Thoughts drifted back a while. Kefalee was thinking of home for the first time in ages. Of her life as a guard in the city of Arkhnalai, in the desert wastes of the Serarkh. Was she homesick?

The answer came quickly: No. And even if she was, she was an exile, she could never return without being killed on sight. Why did her thoughts race though?

The scroll...It was sitting in her room. Written in the Naachi tongue, a common tongue from her homeworld of Anyeh. Only one sentance was really important, the rest was legal crap that she never cared about.

"Zhi mahri kwei a'Kefalee Djarna Al-Anar i'lahnei s'srinn de'ril nila e'ntaira e'carash denzhi lehrili denzhi Serarkh, effelena irridani e'feriana'hi nur."

In common, the translation was, "The woman known as Kefalee D'harna Al-Anar is hereby stripped of her name and titles and banished from the nations of the Serarkh, effective immediately and forever more."

Why did she keep it? Kefalee wasn't entirely sure, but she kept it anyway. She remembered re-reading every word of it earlier that morning. She remembered the sinking feeling she had gotten the day she was banished and given the scroll, and every day afterword that she had thought of it. The feeling that she had no family or a people to call her own anymore. She was a Serkh in flesh now, but no more than that.

The feeling wasn't as bad though, not today. It still was a sinking feeling, but not as bad anymore. She had a family now, even if it was just one person. She had Nilme, she wasn't lonely anymore. A smile played Kefalee's face before she stepped out into the bazaar and took up her post.

The things you do, the ways you change...For love.
