A Dead end in the Underdark
From the private journal of Veldyn
As I write this, I am at a dead end in the Underdark. Seeing no way out, I feel a need to write something down, something to ensure that I am not just a nameless corpse, if I am ever found. By now, about a fortnight in this place with no food or water, I have given up hope of escape and need something to distract myself for a while, at least. So, I will write this journal detailing my experiences in the Underdark, or at least the significant ones. I am Veldyn, once of house Ewytewa, now no more.

Before you Read On
From the private journal of Veldyn
The first thing that one would need to know about me is this: I am not a good person. I am not, I never have been, and I seriously doubt that I ever will be. I've dealt with fiends, struck deals, and outsmarted, no, out-fiended them. I've traded parts of my being for power. I've killed to further my goals, lied, deceived, enslaved, inflicted nearly any harm you could imagine on others in the pursuit of power. I only did any of it when it aided me, or made the world better off without hindering me, but when I did kill, I did so mercilessly and without remorse. I am not random in this evil, and I do good where I can without hindering myself, but I am out for myself, plain and simple.

A Dead end in the Underdark
From the private journal of Veldyn Ewytewa
As I write this, I am at a dead end in the Underdark. Seeing no way out, I feel a need to write something down, something to ensure that I am not just a nameless corpse, if I am ever found. By now, about a fortnight in this place with no food or water, I have given up hope of escape. So, I will tell my story, of how I came to be here, and why I remain, starting from the beginning. I never knew my father. He was some insignificant peasant, I was told. My mother was an important priestess. She displeased the Matriarch and was executed when I was 10. The only thing I really remember about her that matters is something she had taught me since birth. Power at any cost. She died in the pursuit of it. I'm not sure of the details, but I believe it had something to do with the Matriarch's family. The nature of the crime, however, was not my concern. My concern was that she had died in the pursuit of power, and so it must be something worth dying for. It was all that could pull me through. I was abandoned and forgotten for many years, but all the while, I had been gaining power. By my 250th year, I had amassed much power, eldritch, infernal, demonic, political, and otherwise. However, I had ceased worship of Lloth, much to the displeasure of Her and House Ewytewa. However, I had become a valuable asset to the House by then, if a risky one. They let me be until sometime around my 450th year. I had become too powerful, too much of a risk to be allowed such independence as I had been given. They attempted to enthrall me through magicks, but I willed their power against them, and they were killed in the process. Later, they sent infiltrators to attempt to subdue an capture me, but made the mistake of believing that there was discontent in those who worked under me. I had them lead the infiltrators to me, and I had a nasty surprise awaiting them. After trying many other means of controlling my power, they began to track down many material components of an incredibly complex ritual which would bind my powers to a soul gem. I believe that it was a soul binding ritual, as I had traded portions of my soul for my power, which replaced what I had lost. I deduced this after my informants recognized a soul gem being brought into the Sanctum. I already felt my power lessening, so I set to work quickly. I scythed my way through the crowds of guards, and reached the main chamber. A cabal of all of the powerful mages and priests of house Ewytewa was arranged in a circle around the soul gem. I gathered what little power I had left at my disposal, and channeled it into one powerful hellfire blast. The soul gem was unharmed, as I expected, but every mage and priest in the cabal was instantly killed, save one. The Matriarch. She was heavily wounded, but prepared for this situation, and cast a cantrip, which set off several wards, opening portals to many different planes. I threw a dagger at her, and it struck her in the abdomen. I reached for another, but stopped, for it was too late. She was able to get one more spell off before she keeled over in pain. The gem was shattered, and the shards were scattered to many different planes. Save one. I caught it and walked over to the Matriarch, who was on the floor in great pain. I absorbed the power from the gem, and put an end to her pain. She had beaten me, and I respected her for it. I was now in a difficult situation. One of the wards had summoned the Ewytewa guards, and there was only one way out. It lead to a dead end, but there was a place to hide. I rushed through the door to the corridor, and, after nearly being smitten by an incredibly out-of-place paladin if Tyr, I made it to the end. There was a small chamber in the back which I had discovered as a young child, and I pushed a brick, which turned around the wall, allowing me into the chamber. And now I am here. Nobody will find me here for a long time to come, but there is no way out through here aside from the entrance. So, I write this memoir, while attmepting to find a way out.

From the private journal of Veldyn
It's been quite a while since I wrote here. Nearly a year. After writing the previous entry, I began pacing. There was a way out. There had to be. Admittedly, I lost my composure, and began throwing what blasts I could muster all around. One of my blasts uncovered something quite odd embedded into the wall, a stone of some sort. It was glowing faintly, and emitted a strange resonance. I moved my hand toward it to pull it from the wall. I held it in my hands, and an idea struck me. I channeled a blast through it, and it began to glow brighter. I continued to channel, and it grew brighter still. I closed my eyes, and then opened them. I was standing in Sigil, in front of the Foul Olde Spirit Inn. The stone was gone. I soon learned where I was, and I began to search for the soul gem fragments. After all, what better place to start than Sigil, effectively the crossroads of the multiverse? A lot has passed since then, to be elaborated on at another time.
