They did it because they loved her.

Strapped behind her back and hidden by cloak, she would appear as a hunchback to many. Her face too was often concealed by cowl, her golden skin, colour of eyes and hair, that mark high on her cheek bone, obvious and distinguishing. Those white wings were the give away to her heritage, one that her parents did not want her to flaunt.

It was a simple life. A farmer's life.

"I know you are there"

This time she definately heard something. Not bird, nor cricket, not rustle of leaf, nor croak of frog but a gentle buzzing noise and the faintest of giggles. She was certain it had been a giggle.

A quick turn of her head and she caught a glimpse of something flit between two trees, a glimmer of a small wing, too large for a dragonfly but the same translucent colouring.

"I know you are real, not the imaginery friend I once thought you. Why will you not show yourself?"

That tinkling giggle again.

She smiled, familiar now with the presence if not the sound of the hidden creature.

Her eyes peeled to the trunk of the tree, she waited, her arms hugging her knees, the gentle breeze ruffling the top-most feathers of her outspread wings as she offered them to the sun's embrace, free and for once, unbound.

Half an hour later, with no more glimpse, she sighed and stood, slipped her wing bindings back on and tossed her cloak about their hump and her shoulders.

"I'm to Elturel city tomorrow" she spoke to the air, informing the presence she knew to be still behind the tree.

"I come of age the day after...my birthday. We are to make pilgrimage to the High Harvest Home and make offering to Chauntea."

"Mother seems to think my prayers, particularly, will bring good harvest this year. She also promised me a look around the markets. I am so excited!"

She drew the cowl over her golden hair and made to turn away, lifting her face for a moment again to the sun, warm on her face, and headed down the path heading out of the little copse.

"Piri! Pay attention!" the wand was snatched out of her hand and the magic sparkle faded.

There were three in the room; a large winged male and two smaller winged fey. The celestial had a stern countenance although the gleam in his eyes softened when they rested on the perky faces of Piri and her kin.

She tried to focus once again on the angel although the loss of the new wand vexed her. He exuded an aura of power and yet she felt no threat - far from it. He had golden locks and wore a suit of gleaming full plate, a symbol of the sun emblazened on the sternum. His feathered wings appeared to broaden his shoulders and he towered over the two pixies. In comparison, her uncle's head, standing all of two and a half feet tall, barely came up to the start of the knight's thigh.

Her uncle spoke then, talked of honour and service, duty and responsibility of fey and family to this celestial and his own. Her name was mentioned, her pointed ears pricked up and she tried to concentrate again.

"First born serves first born. The bond was so made and it will be kept. Piri will be sent to Toril, my Lord."

She saw her uncle bow low to the angel, his head now well below the kneeline of the golden man. She blinked then, surprised at his gesture, never having before seen her uncle pay deference to another, being a highborn in their clan in his own right.

Curiosity kept her attention now fixed on the two, wand forgotten, as she attempted a slight bow of her own seeing her uncle waggling a finger at her to follow suit. A question bubbled out of her.

"But...?"

"Pssshht. Quiet Piri." her uncle checked her.

The celestial lord turned and smiled directly upon her then and the room seemed to brighten even more.

"Your kin will explain child. You will do me the greatest honour and favour if you will fulfill the bond and promise your family made to mine."

"You are the key, Piri. Keep you both safe." he ended and with a curt nod to them both he turned on his heel and with long strides departed from the room.

"But...?" she questioned again, looking to her uncle but he merely took her arm and linked it through his, with a flutter of wing he rose in the air, drawing her also into hovering flight.

"We need to talk Piri. You have a journey to make and a job to do."

"Ah, ah, ah" he raised his boney index finger to her as she would have interrupted again.

"I will explain what I can and the rest is up to you....and him in time" his gaze flicked towards the doorway where the aura and light of the angel still lingered.

"In time."

They followed the banks of the river Chionthar and picked up the Skuldask road heading towards the city. Dawn was breaking as they had made early start. Her father carried the sack of offerings, her mother a pack of supplies for the journey and she carried her scythe, balanced on her back, snug between the twin pillows of her covered wings.

A single hellrider passed them by on his patrol of the road and as they neared the city a couple of hours later the road broadened and more travellers, wagons and mounted nobles shared their path. Passing underneath the raised portcullis they could see the turrets of High Hall Castle high on one side, the crowds teeming at the entrance to Shiarra's market to the other but they followed the throng of the populace into the city proper towards the temple.

The service was already underway. Joining the busy line, Naya'il kept close to her parents, watching in awe and wonder at the vaulted high ceilings, smelling the incense in the air and taking all of the colours and shapes of the crowd present at the festival service.

With the bag of offerings in her arms, her mother nudged her toward the priest standing by the altar.

"Make your prayer for us dear heart and receive the blessing. May Chauntea favour us again this year."

The priest beckoned her forward as next in line and her mother let go her hands from her shoulders. It was neither fortunate nor unfortunate then that her mother's fingers caught in the cowl as she moved forward, pulling it back from her head to reveal her golden halo of hair.

Those nearby caught their breath, the priest paused in his blessing. Instead of annointing the top of Naya'il's head, his fingers moved to lightly trace the mark on her cheekbone and in a quiet voice only she could hear, he then spoke.

"It would seem you are twicely favoured my dear. A dual divine path is a rareity indeed. Have a care however. The gods can be fickle if you do not train well and give proper worship and devotion....ahhh.."

He gave a knowing sigh and caught her lavender gaze in his own seeing something more of the divine stare back at him through innocent untested eyes.

"Yours is intuitive and natural...interesting."

After a moment more pause that seemed longer than it really was, he completed the blessing of Chauntea, while her mother slipped the cowl back to its place on her head. Leaving the offerings with the priest's helpers they bundled her out of the temple.

The rest of the day was but a blur of people and noise, market stalls, street vendors and entertainers of the day's festivities adding much to the usual hustle and bustle of the city life. Not once did they let go her hand, nor did she again let down her cowl but she followed the frivolities with her eyes, taking it all in, enjoying the wonder of it all and the sensations it stirred until it was time to make their way back to their farm settlement on the Fields of the Dead.

She didn't know quite what it was that made the experience begin to sour for her. She wasn't sure what she had expected the experience to be but it was not the rough grunting in her ear, the heavy weight on her body nor the coarse laugh between thrusts.

"I...can't ...believe...that..I ...am actually....giving one...to an angel!"

The sweet words and romantic gestures were long gone and she realised now how false they had actually been.

She closed her eyes, turned her face to the side and waited for him to finish, slumping moments later on top of her like a dead weight.

She shifted then and attempted to slide out from under, pushing at his rib cage with both hands.

"Oh no, no. No you don't. Give me a minute angel and I'll be good to go again" he followed that with a wet tongue lick across her cheek and caught her wrists with his hands, pressing them to the ground at her sides.

"Wait until the other lads hear about this" he chuckled, his lips to her temple, causing her to wince in disgust at herself and increase her efforts to withdraw.

She could feel him hardening again as her struggles continued when she heard four sounds in quick succession; the first a click, the second a whistle of air, the third a soft thud and the fourth a sharp yowl of pain, this last directly in her ear. All four were swiftly repeated leaving the man's body atop her, slumped over her as dead weight once more, but this time, snoring loudly.

"By Chauntea! What in the Nine Hells just happened here?!" she exclaimed and with his grasp now relaxed she was finally able to scrabble out from underneath, pushing down the skirts to her robe in the process.

She glanced up from the body and her eye caught sight of the fey, hovering ten paces away a crossbow in hand, a wide grin spread from ear to pointy ear. There were two fletched bolts quivering and embedded in each pale naked buttock cheek of the prone male and the two females could only look at each other, one in surprise and relief, the other with cheeky glee.

"He'll no be remembering anything of this, Naya. 'An he'll be sleeping like a baby for a bit. If you want to forget those last few minutes too....?" Piri left the question open.

Naya'il shook her head and pursed her lips, sat hugging her knees and spread her wings, shaking them out to the sides to loosen them where they had been crushed earlier.

"No. This is one lesson I will need to remember."

"That was you?" she raised her fine eyebrows in surprise.

"You" she accused with a bark of laughter and pointed a finger at the pixie "...painted my wings green while I dozed by the waterpool....it took me two days to get that out of the feathers...I thought I had caught some odd disease!"

The pixie held a hand to her mouth trying to keep her titter from turning into a full blown giggling fit as she remembered the trick and the fun she had had watching the angel-girl deal with the green leaf dye.

"Yep, yep..that was Piri!" the pixie nodded. "I was....bored!" she held out her hands to the side, palms up in an apparent apologetic gesture but her grin could only be described at that point as impish.

"Do you trust me?" Piri buzzed at her over her head.

"Piri.." Naya'il paused from cutting the wheat and rested her arms on the top of the scythe handle."Give me one good reason after all the pranks you have pulled on me since I have known you...or at least since knowing you were real..why I should trust you hmm?"

The pixie scratched her pert nose and thought on that one before responding.

"Ahh...yep....good point"

That said it all really.

She was toiling in the wheat field. Beads of sweat formed on her brow and trickled down her shoulder blades beneath her heavy wings, underneath that old grey cloth binding. Focused on her task, she 'felt' Piri approach, heard the faint familiar sound of flitting wing nearby but the pixie stayed invisible. Just as well. Her parents and another worker shared the harvesting of that field although they were some distance away from her patch.

The slightest breath of air on her face was followed by a light voiced whisper.

"You were not born to be farmhand you know. You've another destiny Naya....far from here."

Naya'il puffed a stray wisp of hair from her eyes and hot cheeks and gave a wry grimace, shaking her head in response and brought the scythe blade down in a controlled sweep to shear the next tufted crop of wheat neatly and close to the ground.

"Right....uh huh..I am going to be regent of Baldurs Gate" she chuckled and the arc of her blade swooped again keeping her rhythm "Why are you here Piri?" but the impish fey had fluttered off, once again avoiding answering her question.

At the time, she would have said it was one of the hardest things she had ever done; to leave the people she most loved, the only parents she had known to seek something of that destiny Piri was so insistent she do.

There had been tears. Her mother had confessed to her a little of her birth and heritage, which explained the wings and reasons for hiding those appendages as she grew up. That her father, her real father was celestial was not exactly a revelation on account of those wings. That being of that bloodline and the fact that he had abandonned her mother to fend for herself leaving her with child was the more shocking.

Her mother had spoken then on the subject of love, attempting to help her understand the ways of that emotion, the influences and the different kinds but, to Naya'il, it still did not excuse her real father's actions in her mind. She could more easily forgive the parents she knew for the wing bindings and the closeted upbringing. It was their way of trying to protect her from the high expectations that the simpler folk have of her kind, to bring a measure of normality to her life, to prevent hurt from childish taunting or excessive fascination and also to avoid the dangers that the natural charm of a half-celestial can affect in others.

That horrid episode the summer before with that 'oaf' of a man and his lying lusting hide had proved that point to her. For some reason she had felt compelled to ensure the bolt wounds had left no lasting damage but she and Piri had simply left him there in the woods to sleep off the effects, reassured by the pixie that he would not remember anything of the time from her initial encouragement, the revealing of her wings to her final struggle and shame.

There were questions to be answered and another path in her life to explore. Piri was right; she was no farmer. She knew in her heart that while blessed by Chauntea, having a bond to the land, that was only half the story. Piri knew something, but getting information out of that imp was nigh impossible. "In time" was the fey's usual response followed by a wistful sigh. For now, Naya'il would trust Piri enough to let her lead them both onwards and see where it took them.

Touring Sigil

An enthusiastic, romantic girl in green, sporting a limp, called Deri. I was taken with her, she seemed open and easy to be with, one of the more normal sights in this odd place.

Nastasia: A flashy tiefling, scantily dressed, a 'local', fairly knowledgeable of Sigil, friendly enough though I was still wary - those horns, red eyes and tail, bringing out some latent instinct of my own heritage to the fore. But there were weirder abominations than her around.

A greeny yellow skinned creature known as a Gith or githzerai to be precise, after some conversation, I was finally 'honoured' by knowing his name Karath'rok.

A couple of other planar types, genasi?. Karlee? and Sparky..no wait, his real name was...Razzuul. The girl came with me to undersigil to try to find that love potion and Razzuul joined us later on the tour...paid his dues 'after' the tour. That was smart...something Piri might have done.

A masked robed tour guide called Marius, with a real imp in tow, bound to serve him. Appeared to be some kind of mage? Decent enough tour for ten 'jinks'...thats ten pieces of the coin currency here.

A bearded man, did not pay his dues for the tour, quite rude about it, sidled up to me after the tour suggesting that "us humans stick together against the other abominatons" it seemed to me that he saw conspiracy around every corner and every creature about. Thankfully my wings were hidden, I was not about to correct him lest he use that term on me.

A snake creature, Yuan-ti? long tail that kept swishing around my feet, kept talking of hot sand baths and munching on snacks.

A skull, a wit of floating bone head. 'Zzzz' his name..or was it Phil? as Deri named him....something between the two I think. Handed out pamphletts about 'Dustmen' when I woke up and exited the mortuary. Death is...not really death here. I was spared, blessed be.

As I sought the brighter tranquility again of the civic Festhall I bumped then into a warrior type, Kelth his name, half clothed and bearing scars that tell of many fights, dark, odd accent but quite possibly also from the prime.

So Piri. I ask you...why have you brought me to this weird place? and in getting me here where in the nine hells have you disappeared to now. Fiend.
