It is no small secret that wizards spewed from the womb of Thay are a cut far above the average wizard. The Red Wizards of Thay are born into a life of magic, indeed children that show magical aptitude are ripped from their parents as young as age five and plunged into almost countless years of study before they are set loose into the world to aid in sculpting the land of Thay into an empire of infinate resources and power. The life of a Thayan wizard naturally leads them to learning an unfathomable numberof subjects which to the normal person is enough to drive one insane. The sheer number of knowledge bestowed upon a student naturally results in the student having to organize his thoughts into easily manipulated compartments of thoughts, theories, and ideas which are easily accessed on a whim.
Karson Maioth is no different. He was taken from his famiy at the real young age of five by the Thayan Acadamy of Magic after a rather childish drawing turned out to be a rune that somehow reanimated the family cat after it was killed by a rabid dog. He graduated at the top of his class nearly twenty years later, his grasp on his specialised school far exceeding that of the other upper level class mates(many of whom suffered unfortunate "accidents" during the final year of study).
His mind was described as a library of endless length and width packed with thousands of places to deposit his quickly accumulating knowledge, perhaps to much. A few of the headmasters naturally fearful and jealous of this spellcasting prodigy attempted to assassinate the twenty five year old man in his quarters one night, which resulted in nothing but a few soft screams, a whirl of magical air and several neat piles of dust and ash scattered near the door of his room while he slept inside soundly. He had naturally suspected their plan for sometime and instead of warding his door he had warded the wall across from his room, a place the assassins hadnt bothered to examine for magical traps which triggered when his unwarded door was opened.
He took the magical robes granted to each graduate with a proud and calculateing smile, saying a quick speech to the other graduates before departing to begin his own experiments and to enjoy his new powers and prestige as a Red Wizard of Thay.
He ended up in Sigil a few months later and not by accident oh no not for a Red Wizard, because you see for a wizard born of Thayan origins "accident" was simply not a word in their vocabulary. He realised that in the city of doors his project and his research would hopefully go unrestricted and unmolested and that with the fast magical and planar resources of the city his experiments would meet with overwhelming results far above and beyond his wildest dreams.
He spent twenty years in the Thayan Acadamy but that was only a prelude, his mind held far more information on a staggering amount of topics but with a mind as superior as his he knew he had room to learn much much more...

In order to understand the complicated clockwork nirvana that is a Red Wizards mind, one first has to peel back the many layers of thought and intellect that compose the workings of his or her mind, take Karson Maioth for example.
Picture if you will a room of infinate length but merely eight feet in height and wide enough for three people to walk down side by side. The walls, ceilings and even floors are covered with doors, this makes the hall look like the hallway of an inn with rows upon rows of rooms for its inhabitants all neatly stacked upon each other from floor to ceiling, or if thats not clear enough for you picture several metal cages stacked neatly atop each other from floor to ceiling and wall to wall.
Karson Maioth wanders down the hall his staff tap tap tapping upon the myriad of doors under his feet as he steps from one to the next. He goes to take a step but pauses in mid stride as the door he is about to step on opens. A head bearing uncanny resemblance to his own features elevates through the opening while the rest of his body remains hidden in the floor.
"I've got it! If we reverse the first and second numerical runes of the third verticle axis we can then..." the man below Karson speaks suddenly.
"Tried that, the abjuratonal proporties of the spell simply force the runes back into place like peice of gum rubber snaping back to its original size and form, but keep trying" the Karson in the hall says calmly as he taps the floor man on the head with his staff.
The other Karson shrugs and grabs the handle to the door and sinks into to the floor, shutting it behind him.
A split moment later one of the many doors on the left wall opens, revealing another handsome image of himself leaning on a staff. The figure speaks to the real karson in a torrent of elven words, which causes him to nod in approval.
"Thats a much better idea then the one he had" he responds with a nod as he taps the door on the floor. The elven speaking Karson bows and shuts the door leaving the man alone in thought.
After a long moment Karson resumes his stride down the hall that is his mind until the sound of a door hinge moving issues from above him. He looks up to see himself looking out over the door, much like one would glance down a hole or pit.
"First blue, second orange, fourth and fifth green and a ninth yellow" the ceiling man says down to the one in the hall.
"Thats maddeningly unhelpful" he retorts as he looks up to the door in the ceiling as it closes.
"Hmm, it appears the Netherese runes depicting the letters A H and J look similiar to the Imaskari numericals for ten fourteen and five, is it possible we put them in the wrong places?" Karson looked to his right to find another handsome image of himself standing in an open door way on the right wall.
"Its possible, in fact its probable but when we try to move them from their places they snap back once we let go" he responds to the man in the doors query.
"So start over" the man says as the door shuts.
"Yes..thank you I could not have possibly figured that out on my own he says as he rolls his eyes and continues down the hall.
Another door opens, this one on the left wall and a...strange image stands in the door way, that of an illithid in red wizard robes.
::Yes, I think the other one was right except maybe instead of start over we can surgically cut the numbers and letters from their spots and "glue" them to their new spots, this would eliminate the arcane elasticity that snaps them back to their original placement:: The creature speaks telepathically.
"How....how did you speak to my mind when..." Karson rubs his temples and looks to the Thayan Illithid as it closes the door.
"Eh its a thought worth considering" said another Karson on the right wall as he closed his door.
The real man rubs his forhead in though when a commotion draws his attention to an open door on the ceiling where he beholds another him casually walking on the ceiling and down the wall away from his now open door.
"Where do you think your going?" he asks with a confused tone.
"I dont like that room its too small and cluttered" comes the response as he dissapears into a door on the right wall.
The real Karson stomps his foot in irritation, and despite knowing whats going to happen he takes a deep breath and speaks.
"Ok the lot of you and I know im going to regret this but this problem of the Imaskari and Netherese runes receeding back to their original placements is starting to annoy me, how can we fix this?". The hallway of doors is quiet for a moment after which it is filled a cacophony of pivoting hinges as hundreds of doors along the floor, ceiling and both walls open, filling the hall with hundreds of voices all sounding alike with the occasional difference, be it another language tone of voice or speed of discussion.

The next part of understanding the mind of a Red wizard, and perhaps the most important part of a Red Wizards mind is to study and learn how he views the world of magic, indeed not only how he views the world of magic but how he reachs out and interacts with it on a dailey basis. The average magically inclined individual knows that to use magic one reachs out and manipulates the tapestry of energy commonly called the weave and molds and shapes it into what ever desired effect the spellcaster desires.
When one witnesses a Red Wizard casting his powerful spells from his very focused arsenal of spells we can see he is doing just that, manipulating the weave just like everyone else, so one cant help but wonder if they do it just like every other wizard how come they are far more skilled at it then others?.
Lets use Karson to continue our dissection , lets take a look at how he views the weave when he casts his spells during his dailey routines.
The portal crackled to life for a brief moment, a shimmering void blowing among the tall grass of the beastlands. The air crackled with electricity, the air hummed with magic and suddenly a figure was standing where the portal was. Karson dusts himself off and holds his hat in place as the wind swirls around him, an agitated groan escapes from his lips. He begins his trek across the rolling grass lands, smirking as he notices many unseelie ladies watching him from afar and he knows they wont approach for they have seen what he can do. He looks around casually as he walks and he sees here and there images, echos of past trips where he launched a fireball towards that tree stump or blasted that clearing over there with a lightning bolt. His mind is so expansive he often finds himself seeing such things as if he is looking at a magical picture of the past as if to remind himself "Been there, done that".
As he crests a nearby hill he pauses and digs his feet into the ground, smirking at a heard of treants moving up the hill at a quickened pace, obviously intent in doing him harm. He calmly lifts his arms out infront and commands his mind to present the weave to him, he becomes aware of the raw carpet of fabric that is the weave and mentally reaches out to clutch at it. He doesnt grasp whole fistfuls of the weave like most wizards do, instead he grabs just enough of what he needs, much like a seamstress scrutinizeing over just the right amount of thread for her new tapestry. He carefully interweaves the threads of magic to the desired effect and tosses it towards the group of treants.
The air grows hazy and dark, the tall grass quicky shrivels and dies the treants bark begins to flake off in massive chunks which break into dust and ash in the wind, the trees slowly stomp to a standstill and stand as lifeless withered husks. Karson looks down upon the patch of decay at the bottom of the hill and smirks as he continues his way down it. As he passes each treant he gently extends his staff and despite being a man of frail stature somehow manages to push the trees over.
"Timbeerrrrr!" he chuckles as the treant husks hit the ground and shatter into millions of withered flecks which are carried away on the wind.
If this little look into Karsons use of magic indicates anything, its a Red Wizards attention to detail. We have all heard stories of Red Wizards appearing enmasse and leveling entire cities, fields, mountain strong holds and such and sure any wizard of skill can do so but most are only able to do so by desperatly grabing fists full of the weave and shaping it quickly and in great globs to the desired effect. Red Wizards are clearly methodical when it comes to their spell casting, and certainly the word "precision" comes to mind when they set about any task either mundane or magical.

Things continue to go according to plan. The long term goals of me and my comrade in Red, established when we arrived here in the city proceed with surpriseing smoothness. The Dustmen have provided a perfect laboratory for our research and I find that cureing the suffering of the living and granting people "perfect health" to be relaxing and I daresay fun.
My red robed associate came by the other day and told me I might have a visitor a man named Hildmor D'kris. He told me a tiny bit about what he knew of the man, supposedly he is well connected and has strings attached to the right people. My comrade says he finds the man entertaining to work with, if only for the fact that he is bored and the man can get us what we need for the completion of our project.
Strings and puppets....
We have given up on the re-animated explosive corpses idea, they just proved to be unstable no matter what we did, although Karson says he has a much more...mundane idea along the same lines. He says its the same concept just with less magic involved. The man loves blowing things up I swear, I saw the damage done by an explosive trap he set for the people who came to flush us out of the sewers...sometimes I think he missed his calling as an Evoker.
Red also came jaunting in giddy as a school child saying the barracks of the Harmonium had been attacked and several convicts were let loose, he loves such chaotic happenings.

Mister Hildmor came to visit me today while i was perforimg a cure for an unforunate orc with a degenerative lung disease. The man seems moderatly in the know of magic though he has alot to learn about necromancy but I can at least see why Karson chose to approach him. The man is with out judgements and with out any moral compulsions towards good or evil. He seemed generally impressed with what he witnessed and we had a wonderful conversation about my profession and our perspectives on the whole "better chemistry through unliving" conversation.
When I returned to my room at the mortuary Red was waiting there for me. He seemed both deep in thought and worried as well. He refused to explain what was bothering him. I finally got him to open up and tell me what was wrong after an hour and a half of grilling.
I was afraid of this...
He has it too.....

Dr Ebon:Whats the name of the guy who defended Hildmor, the lawyer.
Karson:Charles Goodmane....wait why the HELL do we need a lawyer?.
Dr Ebon:Im pressing legal action against the woman who hit us with the sling stones.

Journal of Dr Ebon
Entry Three
I am...I'm losing my patients with Karson. All he does is slink around the market trying to sell his necromantic wares(as exquisite as they are). I keep telling him offering one type of school is not going to bring in the big money. He is becoming more and more aggressive towards me. His research into crafting exploding undead to spread disease and decay has failed across the board and he seems to have just given up on his pursuit of knowledge and power(one of the defining characteristics of being a red wizard!), he's drifting aimlessly. He spends more time on brux animating hordes of slain beasts and pitting them against each other then any real research, all the while my research among the dustmen continues well. I hope to achieve a "true death" and join the rest of my dustmen comrades.
He's tried getting into the criminal underworld via hild'mor and found the man boring and predictable, he's tried getting into sigil politics but found them lack luster and boring as well. He seems to be sliding towards stagnation faster then i can fathom.
Maybe I should take over....he's so tired lately he doesn't talk to me much anymore and he lets me out when ever i want.
He would fight me of course...it would be violent at least mentally, perhaps physically as well but maybe its for the best...
If it comes down to it i know a way i can make it happen....

*Sounds of foot steps running, the foot falls echoing within Karsons mind, a door opening and slamming shut with a loud BANG, heavy breatheing*
Dr Ebon: Oi now! What the hell is going on? You made me spill my Formaldahyde!.
Karson: We're in big trouble...big big trouble.
Dr Ebon: Calm down red, tell me whats going on.
Karson: They found us!.
Dr Ebon: Who found us?
Karson: The Zulkirs, they found us!.
Dr Ebon: Thats impossible!.
Karson: Im not bloody lieing! I dont know how they found us but they did!.
Dr Ebon: Who did they send?
Karson: *Still breatheing heavily, stutters out a first and last name to the Doctor*.
Dr Ebon: Gods....no....not....
