18 winters old

After driving father crazy when I am up during the night, he suggested I start keeping a journal to pass the time until morning. I suppose I could start by introducing myself a little.

I am Kalyn. I live alone with my foster father Nimus, a former soldier, in the outskirts of Athkatla in Amn. My mother Amalyn Orlezea died after delivering me. Father says she worked as a barmaid when they met the first time.

Father has taught me a lot, including cooking and even archery and some swordfighting. It is nice being able to help him out with taking care of us both. Tomorrow I go on my first hunt to bring down a wild deer outside town.

37 winters old

I have been going to school for many winters now, and currently live in a dormitory on the university grounds. It is difficult being older than most other students when you look their age. Instead of socializing I mostly spend my spare time reading and swimming.

I have gotten hold of some simple magic scrolls that I am currently studying in secret to see if I have any comprehension of the arcane. Just some cantrips, but maybe someday I could advance to more useful spells if I keep at it.

I even managed to summon my own familiar! A small cat I call Silas. He is quite clean and very quiet, but I still must make sure the teachers do not see him or learn he is not an ordinary cat.

56 winters old

It is horrible. I have been expelled from school. Yesterday a group of boys tried raping me! I did the only thing I could think of and hit the leader with a magic missile spell, right in the forehead. Now he is dead and my future at the university is as well.

I acted in self-defense and have been cleared of murder charges, but now the whole school knows I have been practicing magic in secret. At least now the bullies will leave me alone. Some comfort.

Tomorrow I leave for good, returning to father in the outskirts of Athkatla. He has grown old over the past winters and could surely use some help keeping the house. I have had little in common with most students, but some I am still going to miss.

65 winters old

When I went home from hunting tonight father was dying! Right before passing away he told me some Cowled Wizards had interrogated him to learn my whereabouts. They did not explain why they wanted to find me, so he kept his word to the very end.

Heartless bastards! What in the hells do the Cowled Wizards want from me? They only concern themselves with important matters, and that spell incident so many winters ago hardly qualifies. I will have to leave Athkatla and Amn behind.

I am thinking of going to a small island off the coast to lay low for a while. Surely the Cowled Wizards will eventually track me down though, so perhaps I should also start studying some teleportation or shape changing spells to finally be rid of them.

Sigil arrival

Disaster! My experimentation with teleportation has sent me one-way to an entirely different plane of existence! I have no idea why, but perhaps my destination marker was drawn to a more powerful portal, thus sending me through it as well right after arrival.

In any case there seems to be no way going back now. For some reason the spell backlashed on me, and I have forgotten how to perform higher-circle spells. All I can muster now are magic missiles and the like. Luckily I can still summon Silas to keep me company in this foreign place.

This place, Sigil, is a large city, housing several strange creatures and portals to various other planes of existence. If I am lucky I may eventually come upon a portal leading me home, but the portals shift and they need keys to activate as well.

Sigil + ½ tenday

No progress getting home yet, but I have nothing to return to anyway. Only the Cowled Wizards and likely imprisonment or execution. If only I knew why they were hunting me so furiously. I miss father.

Currently I have been "planeswalking" the Gray Wastes, a bleak plane with no colour and several lumbering zombies attacking anything they see. Not the best place to be, but it helps me stay in fighting shape and motivates me to keep experimenting on magic.

I have also gone to Elysium with some friends I have made in the "Monster Hunters' Guild". There was some serious inter-guild rivalry going on between the members one time, but I hope it has died out now. Elysium is a very calm and beautiful place, and it gave me the opportunity to swim in the ocean again. How I have missed it.

Sigil + 1 tenday

Finally managed to recall my first second circle spell. Not much but I am hoping the rest will come to me more easily now. It feels good to finally remember it again. Hopefully it will be useful in protecting me from the many dangers of planeswalking.

I went to my first meeting with the "monster hunters" also. Not a big agenda, it seems the guild has more or less formed only recently. I had no idea we were so many though. A few I knew already, but there were plenty new faces aswell.

After introductions and some battle tactics discussions, I was sent on training in the Paraelementary Plane of Ice together with another guild member. Our teacher did not speak much but it was obvious she knew what she was doing. I learned a lot about my strengths and limitations.

Sigil + 2 tendays

I am a failure. My combat teacher in the guild actually said so today. I could not even hit her in close combat. She kept dodging and disarming me. So embarassing. Maybe I should just stick to the longbow and spellcraft. Maybe find a slow fighter type to use as a meat shield along with my summons.

I need to head back to the Beastlands or library to train dagger fighting a lot more before I am prepared for proper combat. Funny how you need a shovel of all things to get in. Went there before training with some guild pals and other folk also.

Almost got overrun by ambushers down in the maze, and we had to drag a few comrades out for medical aid. Not a great day of success. Going to take a nice long bath now. Probably read up on some more third circle spells after that. I feel like I almost have them again now. Gods, it is so frustrating having to relearn them.

Sigil + 1 month

Finally some progress. I have spent a lot of time in Elysium reading up on third circle spells and finally I think I have managed them all. Field testing in the Beastlands revealed fire spells particularly effective against the natives. Combust can almost take down a Treant all by itself as long as you can endure its punishment in the meantime.

But now I am back to my arcane knowledge from before the Sigil incident. Further spellcraft progress is likely not going to occur for several tendays. Perhaps it would be best to seek out a private tutor. I met a fairly capable one, Zachan, in Sigil a few days ago. Maybe he would be willing to teach me.

On another note I also got to brush up on my Sylvan a bit. I came by two women of Fey heritage the other day while wandering the Beastlands. One of them, Vish-something, seems a capable spellcaster. The other, Yasher-something, just seems weird. In Elysium she kept pinching me when we were swimming. Crazy woman.
