Sin's cell was cold, plain and depressing. The air was dank, and the view from the bars utterly pointless. For the longest time, her world consisted entirely of herself and the wardens that brought her three meals a day of undercooked, tasteless gruel. She rarely took the meals and ate one every few days, just to keep herself from getting too ill, though it had the unfortunate side effect of thinning her out over time.

The monotony of existence in the cell was mindnumbing. Day after day passed, and Sin could barely tell one moment from the next. She forgot how to stop time and nearly forgot how to talk properly to someone; her only interaction was when the guards informed her a meal was waiting by the cell door.

Day after day passed...Or maybe it was less. Sin stopped knowing, or even caring, how long she had been in the cell. The only way she had to amuse herself was draw figures in the dirt, draconic runes that often didn't spell anything in particular out. She had no songs to sing, and even if she did, she had nobody to listen to them.

Day after day continued to pass, until the monotony was broken when a dark-skinned human girl was shoved into her cell. Sin stared in disbelief - could she really, finally, have a cellmate? Someone to talk to, someone to
be next to?

Aliyah, as she was called, proved to be rather shy and quiet. Not unpleasant, but very nervous. Sin herself was nervous though - she worried that if she said anything, she would look like a fool. Speech was a skill best practiced, and she had utterly no opportunity to in the past while.

They talked a little bit, and Sin learned that Aliyah had been arrested for theft as well. For the most part, Aliyah was quiet, and Sin often continued doodling in the dust when they were not talking. But even that was far better than being alone.

During the night (or whatever time of day it was when the two decided to catch some sleep), two wardens came up the door. The sound jolted both of them awake, and Sin turned to see a tall, muscular man and a female warden that looked rather familiar, perhaps the one that incarcerated her. They stepped into the cell and pulled Aliyah out, and Sin suddenly felt her heart sink once more. She moved up towards the door of the cell, gripping one of the bars tightly in one hand.

Hours passed and Sin's heart continued to sink. Feeling miserable again, the drowess moved to curl up on her bedmat, closing her eyes and trying in vain to block the feeling out. After several hours had passed, the cell opened again, and Aliyah was shoved back into the cell. Sin stood up with a start and looked over to the door of her cell.

After the warden left, Aliyah walked over to her own bedmat stiffly and sorely. Sin walked over and sat down next to the other woman, softly putting her hand on Aliyah's shoulder. The action was met with a wince and a shiver as Sin accidentally touched a sore spot, and the drowess retracted her hand.

After a few moments, Aliyah burst into tears. Sin's heart sank a little again at seeing her cellmate in this state, surprising herself quite a bit. Sin had learned to genuinely care.

Sin felt helpless with Aliyah in her arms. She had no idea what she could say, if anything at all, so she just softly ran her hand through the other woman's hair as she cried, keeping her arms wrapped around her. It took a while, but eventually Aliyah's crying became quieter, and as the girl drifted off into sleep against Sin, it eventually stopped altogether.

It didn't take long before the drowess fell asleep against Aliyah as well, the two of them embracing each other as they slept, leaning against each other...

Two days had passed since Aliyah arrived. Aliyah started the night by laying on her bedmat, eyes closed, but not sleeping. Sin didn't even bother to close her eyes or lay down, instead sitting on her own bedmat, watching the woman across the cell worriedly.

After a while, Aliyah opened her eyes and stood up. The human walked over to the bench beside Sin's bedmat. "Thank you," she said, abruptly, accompanied by a weak smile. "I don't even know if I would have done the same for you if I were in your shoes."

Sin looked up towards Aliyah and gave her own weak smile in return. "How...Are you feeling?" the drowess asked quietly, still rather worried about her companion.

"I'm much better," Aliyah offered in response. "The soreness has subsided. Now it just feels raw when I move."

Sin smiled slightly and gave a faint nod to Aliyah, speaking softly, trying her best to be as encouraging as possible. "Well...That's improvement." The drowess stood up and walked over to the bench, sitting down next to Aliyah as she spoke.

Aliyah gave another smile to Sin, but this time it was stronger, more sincere. "I want to know more about you," the girl blurted out as she turned her doe-eyed gaze up towards Sin.

Sin blinked briefly, before shrugging. "Me?" she asked, not that there was anyone else she could have been talking to. "There isn't a whole lot to tell. I'm a drow, I'm freakishly tall, and I'm a thief."

Aliyah asked another question after that. "Do you have a family?"

This question caught Sin off guard. She initially had no idea how to respond to it, but she managed, after a while, to give a response. "...I don't know, really," the drowess said with a slight shrug. "It depends on what you call family."

After a moment of silence, Aliyah looked up again and asked one more question. "Do you have anyone that cares for you?"

Sin hesitated again, then let out a silent sigh before giving a one-word answer. "...No."

Aliyah reacted a little better than Sin thought she would at that statement, simply staying "Okay" in response.

Sin shrugged a bit, attempting to downplay it a little. "For most drow," she began, "'care' and 'love' and other such words are not in our vocabulary." Though she didn't say it, Sin's thoughts turned towards the wardens.
Love and care aren't in theirs either...

Aliyah looked up towards Sin again. "I'm sorry to hear that. How come you're different?"

Sin couldn't help but smile a bit to Aliyah at the question. "I don't know," she said, seeming a bit more relaxed than earlier. "But I would have to wager a guess that I am not a full-blooded drow. Pure drow are never six feet tall."

Aliyah nodded in response. "That's true. Actually, human women are rarely that tall, too."

Sin nodded and turned her head to look towards the ground. "I noticed...But I don't suppose it really matters in the long run. We are who we are."

Aliyah turned her head down, silently staring at her hands. Sin smiled weakly to Aliyah before continuing. "Good and bad, I suppose..." she said, before murmuring an addition to herself, "...And I guess I really do deserve to be in here."

Aliyah widened her eyes as she heard Sin's whispered thought. "Why is that?" she asked, equally quietly whispered as the thought had been.

Sin blinked and looked back to Aliyah. "...I broke the law. I tried to steal something."

"Were you hungry?"

Sin shook her head. "No. I didn't even try to steal food. I tried to steal an amulet, a magical one. Come to think of it, I don't know why I even tried to take it in the first place."

Aliyah looked surprised for a moment, but no look of condemnation or judgement graced her features. "I see..." the woman said quietly, before lowering her voice again. "They caught me stealing food at a soiree in the Lady's Ward. Apparently some blood was poisoned there, and they suspect I did it."

Sin blinked a couple of times and looked over to Aliyah, the look of worry returning. "Oh dear..." she murmured, more to herself than anyone, before finally speaking again. "...Did you?"

"They've got me definitely on counts of stealing, and they're trying to sing..." Aliyah nearly hissed as she spoke, "But I really didn't! I'm not a killer."

Sin nodded a little and gave a small smile to Aliyah. "It's okay...I didn't say you did. I believe you."

Aliyah let out a small sigh before continuing. "I don't even like hurting people. There was just so much food there, and I knew they were going to throw it..."

Sin softly placed a hand on Aliyah's shoulder, smiling gently to her. "You were hungry..."

"I guess I was in the wrong place at the wrong time," Aliyah murmured weakly.

Sin nodded in response. "Sometimes, that happens."

Aliyah turned to meet Sin's eyes. "I just hope I'm not locked up in here for life! There is so much more I wanted to do!"

Sin sighed briefly and murmured, "I hope not either..."

"What a miserable existance..." Aliyah murmured, her lips turning to the faintest hint of a scowl.

Sin gave a small smile to Aliyah. "I know...But it was worse when I was alone."

Aliyah blinked, then turned her head away, looking embarrassed. "Oh...Sorry..."

Sin tilted her head a little, looking a bit confused as she asked, "Sorry about what?"

Aliyah looked back up towards Sin after a moment. "I was complaining, but I guess I haven't had it as bad as you. It must have been horrible to have nothing to do...No one to talk to..."

Sin nodded and sighed. "It...Really was."

"I can't even imagine..."

Sin gave a small chuckle after a moment. "...I didn't believe you were real for the first couple of minutes."

Aliyah laughed as Sin continued. "Until then, I didn't see another soul. Just the wardens. And I'm not sure they count."

Aliyah smiled a little. "I'm glad I have--!" Her speech was interrupted by the sound of heavy, armoured footsteps outside their cell.

"You, come," the female warden that seemed to watch over this block of cells said coldly towards Aliyah, before unlocking the door and stepping in.

Aliyah widened her eyes and backed into the corner. "N-no, p-please!" she begged, her voice trembling with fear.

The warden scowled and rolled her eyes briefly. "Do not make this difficult," she said, cold as ever. "We need to ask you questions."

Sin bit her lip before standing up, moving to stand in front of Aliyah, shielding her away from the wardens. "Can you not ask them here?" she asked, staring at the ground, her voice trembling a little as well.

The warden glared coldly, hatefully at Sin. "I can extend your sentence thricefold if you obstruct justice."

Something snapped inside Sin as she heard that. Suddenly, she wasn't afraid anymore - she was angry. Angrier than she had ever felt before. She looked up and stared directly in the warden's eyes, fighting to keep from lashing out with every foul word across every language she knew. In the end, she neither moved, nor said anything.

Sin was greeted with a scowl again, then the warden attached a set of rusty spikes onto her gauntlet. Sin stared for a few more moments, a near-literal fire burning behind her eyes, before she finally turned to Aliyah. "...It's your choice..." she murmured softly to the girl as the warden entered the cell.

Sin felt Aliyah take her hand and lead her to the side. She watched, the rage still burning within as Aliyah walked over to the warden, looking up into their captor's eyes defiantly.

As the warden led the girl away, Sin quietly growled two words in the direction of the warden. "Yrai tyean." One day.

One day, she would rip the spine out of that woman and strangle her with it for what she did, and was about to do again, to Aliyah. As the door shut behind Aliyah and the wardens, Sin walked up and gripped the bars on the door tight enough that her knuckles went white. She spent the first little while mentally devising various violent ways to kill the warden, before she finally managed to calm herself.

Once she was calm, Sin walked over to sit down on the bench near her bedmat again. Sin stared at the ground for a while as despair slowly replaced the rage that had filled her mind before, and after a little while, Sin burst into tears.

After a little while, the warden came back, dragging Aliyah by the hair. Sin choked a sob back and looked up as the warden opened the door and stepped inside. Aliyah was unconscious, her forehead and right arm both bandaged, with a bit of blood seeping through the bandage on her forehead.

Sin felt the rage return as she stared the warden right in the eyes. "Yrai tyean..." she growled again, balling her hand into a tight fist at her side as the warden left.

With the warden's departure, the rage died down and was replaced by worry. Sin swiftly moved to kneel at Aliyah's side for a moment, before carefully trying to carry her over to the bed. It took a while, but eventually Sin managed to carefully drag the woman over.

Sin sat down for a moment and caught her breath before walking over to her own bedmat. She pulled the thin blanket off and wrapped it around Aliyah, just as the unconscious woman began shivering. The blanket seemed to help - Aliyah stopped shivering after she was wrapped.

Sin frowned as she noticed that Aliyah's forehead continued bleeding. With Aliyah's breathing slowly returning to normal, Sin focused her efforts on the bandage. First, she tried to rip a chunk of cloth off of her own tunic to act as a replacement, but when that proved impossible, Sin just pulled the tunic off altogether. Topless and naked from the waist up, Sin began shivering in the cold as she dabbed at Aliyah's forehead with the sleeve. It didn't do much, but at least it cleaned the blood up, if nothing else.

Through the night, Sin sat at her cellmate's side, tending as best she could to the wound, and just sitting in silent vigil all other times. Not once through that whole night did Sin sleep.

At the beginning of the morning, Sin had been asleep on her bedmat. This was day four since Aliyah had been here - or, it would be when she woke up.

The night had gone by fairly quickly, and when Sin woke up, she rubbed her eyes and looked over towards the other end of the cell, looking to see if Aliyah was still there...

..and Aliyah was nowhere to be found. Her empty, unperturbed bed-mat lay forebodingly on the hard-stone floor like a freshly made coffin.

Sin stood up and slowly walked over to the other side of the room, then looked up towards the exit. The sinking feeling returned almost immediately as she noticed the absence of her cellmate, and she slumped down next to Aliyah's bedmat, staring quietly at it, not knowing what else she could possibly have done.

"...They've taken her again..."

Surprisingly, Aliyah returned unscathed with her eyes dry this time. Upon returning to the cell she curled up beside Ssin-Tasthi and offered a weak smile. She had not been tortured.
