Yes, she remembered it, but the only reply she gave to Rhistel was a firm nod.
Her cloak suddenly fluttered due to a stronger gust of her own breeze as she turned her back to him and walked next to the corpse, in the middle of the circle. Her hand rested on the rapier's hilt, her gaze piercing each of the orbs. They were warded enough considering where they were going, weren't they? But what kind of place was that, exactly?
She closed her eyes, and started concentrating.

He looked at her reaction, a neutral expression on his face, then raised a brow as the girl went back to the corpse and fell into meditation.

"Do focus on what I say, for now, all right? I'd rather not repeat the same mistake we did during last experiment because of another distraction," he added in a quiet tone.

As soon as he saw the actual configuration, he understood they were soon going to have a second chance to complete the procedure they failed last time.
Or a second chance to fail all over again.

"I am going to move the Body in the Sixth position," explained turning toward the Orbs again. "If I did not misunderstand the balance between the energies, it means that Soul is going to place itself in Sixth position as well and Mind will end in Second.
And that, ironically, would be extremely similar to the configuration where we failed last time."

He didn't wait for a reply to make the move: he was fairly certain of the outcome of his action and he knew it held no imminent danger, so he simply shifted the position and waited for the energies to balance again in the new configuration.

At last Rhistel's and Neerepha's combined effort born fruit. They had gone to great lengths indeed and done the unthinkable. The gem shattered and reformed was anchored to the poor sod's soul, whose lamented moan sent shivers down the spine as the little pieces of the black sapphire were brutally imbued into its essence just before it embarked on its journey to the afterlife.

Hanging onto the escaping soul they were pulled with it. It did not need a portal to cross the boundaries of planes, somehow it just naturally shifted out of the wizard's laboratory and they brought together with it. The arcane sigils of wizard's prison soon broke loose and soon the dim light of his room was replaced with a thick silvery mist, passing in front of them at speed greater than any hurricane's yet quiet as a forest stream. They realised they were travelling in an Astral Conduit.

Rhistel would have recalled his previous visions of Dwayne Kerrick, who was apparently once priestess Lilazi's beloved. One day the priestess jealously killed Mina, another woman Kerrick found close, and destroyed her remains so she could not be ever ressurected. Ever since Kerrick became a Defier, not just any defier, but member of Athar. He died in accident in Beastlands some time later, where he was apparently trying to capture an Astral Streaker - an elusive birdlike creature rarely seen outside the Astral plane, domesticated by Gith and other Astral dwellers as a messenger on the plane. Kerrick apparently believed the rare wild specimens had their nests close to concentration of Memory Cores, the remains of memories of dead mortals, where he was trying to search for what else could remain of long lost Mina.

The little detour from the Astral Conduit presented Rhistel with a new problem, but could he afford to pass by the Memory Cores idly? But to find the one he wanted was not an easy task either. Soon, while devising the darkest methods of his own he suddenly found himself chasing Astral Streakers. Could the half-drow be going mad yet?

The wizard moved forward and caught up with one of the bypassing birds with astonishing ease. Once it was captured Neerepha could see unlike the ones they saw earlier, this bird, who was earlier flying around in a wild, confused circle, was also not looking well, as if sick, with receded feathers and generally worn by time - if the concept of time had sense in this plane. Which made one wonder, how long was it actually there?

Rhistel would notice that this Streaker was carrying a message attached to its leg too. Upon investigating the scroll was actually a rather uninteresting, military-sounding report of volumes of available resources. What was more interesting was the language it was written, for the dialect has not been used for a very long time now. It was used by Gith not long after they broke into two factions. He could be absolutely sure as many of the words were currently present exclusively in either Githzerai or Githyanki speech.

[align=center]There are things a Wizard will never want to be known for.
The Soul Handle is one of those.

Not mad. Not yet, at least.
Not that he hadn't all the right to be, at the moment. Weeks of study, all out of the window because all it took to a Signer to get the same result was to simply wish for things to be how they wanted... no, right now he was well beyond insanity.
And he was doing extremely good, nonetheless.

The Memory Cores... that place was something he needed to witness with his own eyes... and didn't matter if not even the Powers ever tried to extract a specific memory from those, that alone wasn't something that was going to stop him from trying anyway.

He loosened his grip on the bird, the thought he might be hurting it crossing his mind briefly before he could even register it.
The feathers, the weakness... that message itself... saying that thing was old was just an understatement.
Could that be it had remained stuck in the Cores since that message was first sent?

It gives a whole new meaning to the concept of "snail mail"... And then one wonders why I would never trust a bird with my communications...

He pushed away the useless remark and focused again on the bird, thinking. What kind of connection could they have with this place? Could they even be of some help for what they were looking for?
He didn't even know why he was considering that... He had thought about a plan already, after all, and he was sure it could even work. So why was he losing his (although endless at this moment) time with those birds instead of just trying his method?

The answer wasn't difficult, he find it almost immediately after just a moment of introspection. He wasn't even ashamed of that, just a little... disappointed, maybe.
Truth is, he wasn't willing to damage who knows how many memories just to find the one he needed.
That much, he wasn't ready to do.
