Kala, leaned to examine the runes more closely before she looked at Emelia.

"We'd better not touch the runes now. Can you feel something else ?"

Emila doesn't answer, not for a mintue or two she simply stares at the spirit looking it up and down.

"It is stuck here it is close but something stops it from moving towards true death, some secret we must uncover."

((Yes is fine for me.

Kala looked at her staff, what she considered as the beacon of her growing power. Older aspirations where gone now, and things had changed. As her eyes examined the staff, she remembered a conversation she had with an eloquent Beleiver of the Source a while ago after a whole day of hard work in the foundry. Her hands and her back where hurting, yet the sword was ready, a fruit of the reminiscent memories of her previous incarnations. At that time the blade carried the same significance the staff had in the present.

She stayed late in the evening to sharpen the blade, but for a brief second she forgot the purpose of the weapon and cut herself. As observed the blood slowly flowing on the metal, flashes of battles, vague images of conflict echoed in her mind as she bandaged herself. She was brought back to reality by the voice of the old muscled old man standing near her. His old blue eyes observing the now inactive forge.

"Do you know what is wrong with them ?"

She glanced at him without a word. He brushed his mustache, eyeing Kala's hand and continued.

"They do not possess the true fire. They speak of creation and they boast of their potential but they do not create anything beyond the mundane. Their imagination is poor, obsessed with small details. A true maker, I say, creates a grand scheme and then concentrates on the details. Starting with the details is for the ants of the imagination - the small insects who aspire only to be fed. Until they cut themselves..."

He smiled and walked away as Kala looked again at her hand and smiled faintly, the sword was for a young man that'll later become a Factor. The sword, lost in a battle with a dracolich didn't changed a lot of things as she had expected, but in the grand scheme of things it was just a step forward in her craftsmanship.

Back in the present, she had now a book filled with runes schemes she could copy and study, but she was conscious that she had to give them another purpose, a purpose that will match the grand scheme she had in mind, something that was beyond the construction of the staff. She skipped the technical parts, focusing her reading to find the glimpses of insight the rune bound spirit left in the work of his life.

There is a lot to read and there is much she knows already. Finding new insights is hard at first but when she gets used to the style the book is written and learns its structure it gets easier and there are a few details that will be useful for her:

-A rune is charged during its creation. Do not let your mind wander, keep it on the purpose, work diligently.

-The harder the material that carries the rune is the stronger can it be made. Also brittle or hard to work materials have the same advantage as- as said above- the invested time is important.

-The runes communicate with each other. The sequence in which they are placed, the way they are connected or bound with each other influence the final outcome and effect.

-Runes that oppose each other can be combined but often need the guidance of a third rune to bind them together or to guide their power into a new direction.

Kala also learns of new ways to bind them to item, to use them to hold charges, combining runic effects with traditional magic.

She also learns if the art of Runic Summoning-but no details are given in this work.

Kala carefully took note of these details and attempted again to craft a rune. While she had grasped the crafting details for years, these new elements sheered a new light on how to craft runes. Yet an important element was still missing : the insight. However, the Factor's enthusiasm was at its peak, and she decided to create runes once again. Her first plan was to seek what was natural for her, rooted deep in the essence of her soul : the power of air. She aimed to create a simple rune to emulate the effect of a Gust of wind spell as soon it was activated properly. Should she had no issue creating it, she would attempt to implement it in her staff making sure to keep the careful balance of the item stable.

Whatever she was successful, Kala would return to the rune master to tell him what she had learned and if he deemed her worthy to continue.

Creating the rune goes well and she learns a lot during this process. A rune of air is easily crafted, her affinity to this element aiding the process greatly.

To get the air moving she has to add other runes to it, binding them together to form something new, to give her idea and purpose shape. It takes a few tries as both runes that make up the new one need to be balanced carefully- too much from one leads to different effects. One attempt even seems to have reversed the action rune, turning the air into something heavy and unmoving- more like the effect of a Solid Fog spell.

When she suceeds a few more tries later she feels something- she feels this new rune, new creation is hers now and from now on easy to replicate. It almost feels as if she added a bit of her own to the vast pool of knowledge that make up the Lore of Runes.

Another step has been taken on her journey, leading her closer to understand. Adding the rune to the staff is something else though.

The staff itself is in most careful balance and everything disrupting it might lead to indesired consequences. However this Gust of Wind Rune is Kala's already, as is the staff. And with her newfound connection to the lore she finds some additional runes that help to bridge the gap and to bind her rune to the item.

Golmar Thenn examines the result carefully. "This will do." He gives the staff back to her.

"What do you think about what you have seen? About the rune master you have met? Tell me your thoughts." The dwarf sits down on the corner of a workbench, stuffs fresh tobacco into his pipe with a callused thumb.

"I think he lost himself in the search for esoteric details instead of aiming for a greater picture. He shaped great golems, bound fiends to his will but again he focused on details, hours he could have spent better knowing himself and learning the multiverse. The runes speak the language of creation, and only those wise enough and willing to understand that nothing is done without a price to pay. This rune was easy to shape as it comes from the very essence of my being, something I took years to explore as I traveled."

"So you understood. He looked outwards when he should have looked inwards. The runes and the caster are connected, they have to grow together and the balance between them must be assured.

Use what you learned so far and when you know you are ready make the next step. His apprentice... he chose a different path in the end. You may learn much from him."
