Kala looked at her staff, touching the rune before she smiled faintly.

"I think my craft can wait for now, but I am ready for the next step."

"Your next step will be to find the apprentice. You saw the master, talked to him but you will see his apprentice is different."

The dwarf lights his pipe, takes a long pull before blowing the smoke from his nose. He seems to be in deep thoughts, his voice distance when he continues.

"This is the nature of the Runes. You know them, make them your own, you shape them and they shape you. They are different for everybody but still the same."

"That's what I'm starting to understand yes..." Kala nodded, thinking deeply about her recent experiences with "art". She waved her hand to say goodbye then went to see the Dustwoman, Emelia.

It took a long time to the factor to progress further. Weeks spent between the study of her notes and books combined with the new insight she had earned from her previous adventures, the rest of her time was dedicated to something she hasn't done for a while : meditation, the quiet silence of Elysium and the grimness of the Gray Waste both proved to be a source of insight. While the factor took care to not stay for too long in both places, she tried to make the best use of her time seeing in the opposition the true sense of the balance she was seeking. Her observation where more about the environment and the feel of the magical powers, especially elements or lack there of running through the places and from there she tried to understand the powers of both positive and negative energy flowing through her staff, how they could be harmonized with other elements and where the line shouldn't be crossed, after all whole project was always a matter of careful balance and of perfection through it, any missteps could lead to a terrible setback, if not a disaster. "Isha", the void had to be carefully balanced with its opposite "Bekez".

Once she finally came back to her laboratory, Kala was confronted to the wast amount of possibilities she had and with a much deeper issue : She didn't know exactly what was the best source of inspiration she could have. The Factor had faith but it was ironically grounded if not deeply rooted in old habits rather than extending outwards. She regarded the first rune she had placed on the device : a rune of air "Ehol", so familiar that creating seemed effortless. Her second attempt would be far more ambitious and outside of her comfort zone but adding the three remaining elements at once could prove more difficult, especially due to her innate lack of affinity with earth.

The two next runes would be fire and water completing Ehol the wind creating a trinity, carved in a zircon. The simple idea of trinity reminded her of a story that happened before her birth, one that shattered the elements in a war that should had never happened reminding her that the absence of earth would remain a flaw she will have to correct soon. Her familiarity with those two elements helped her research she decided nonetheless to pay a visit to their respective planes. There, standing among flame and water she listened and grasped something from the elderly primordial ages of the multiverse that could hardly be described with words, only in one symbol capturing the very meaning of FIRE and WATER in all their aspects : "Agasz" and "Ialgus". Yet these symbols where basis to expand upon, wild and untamed forces that would require patience and dedication to be shaped and only words uttered in their own element languages could activate them. While the symbols were simple, thier deeper meaning overwhelmed her limited human senses, yet her soul, more receptive and sensitive, was able to efficiently grasp them.

Yet she also remembered that air would every be the first and most cherished, the starting point that no amount of free will could change it. This realization made things clearer for her, the words she heard were already transformed by her own perception of things and she had to adapt, constantly reminding herself that everything should be shaped to interact with air and the dual energies of life and destruction imbuing the staff. Back in her laboratory, she came with a schematic, something that could lead to improvement later, but at least the basics where defined.

The most complex part now was to make sure these were correctly carved in the staff and that suitable gems were used for the carving. For "Agasz" she used a fire opal, for "Ialgus" she used an Aquamarine. Once these two runes were properly implemented in the staff, she made sure to shape one for both negative and positive energy linking them to all the four elements with other runes. The rune of life "Bekez"was in a crystal and its opposite "Isha" in an obsidian. Once all the five where made, she carefully placed them on the staff according to her schematics, praying to not unsettle the fragile balance of the artifact. The trinity of elements wasn't an ideal situation but she had to compose with her own limits for now.

Once all the greater runes were placed, she carefully carved "minor runes", those made to activate effects using the records she had borrowed from the two rune masters and tested their effect in different situations using the two driving energies of creation and destruction and three elements. She also had to remember that air would remain its key element, meaning the item was since its inception imbued with a sense of action and movement and this whole idea had to be reflected on the runes as well.

Through diligent work and careful planning Kala suceeds to add the runes to her staff without disrupting the balance that keeps the artifact together.

Yet she feels it struggle- the lack of Earth forcing the staff maintain the balance through the sheer force of its unique properties.

Earth is an anathema to who and what she is but Kala studied the lifes of two Runelords- and both failed because they lost their balance. This loss of balance can lead to stagnation or even worse, to destruction and so she realizes that to grow she will have to find a way to include earth as well- somehow.

The staff itself is an item of great power now, the runes able to draw power from the conflicting energies caught in it and Kala feels that with some practice she will be avble to channel the power into many effects.

However it must be done carefully, she has to be mindful of the how delicate the balance is... a single mistake and everything might blow up.

Once her work was finished, Kala stood there for a whole day meditating over the staff. The artefact was created in her image, but maybe the item required one last thing to reach its full potential : herself. However the perspective of beign emprisonned for eons within an item equaled her overall fatigue of existence, people expected her to be there. She had duties and obligations she would never bear to leave behind. It was in this sour state of mind that Kala returned to her teacher.

She finds the man sitting on a footstool in front of the Great Foundry, smiking his pipe, a small knife in his callused hands. He is surrounded by a few children who watch with awe as he carves small, mechanucal animals out of the wiiden debris they bring him.

A small horse and a goat are trotting on the ground already, subtle enchantments and runes giving the simple toys the ability to move.

He looks up as he notices Kala, gestures to her to join them- some of the kids eying her warily, obviously not happy that they now have to share their 'tinker dwarf'.

Kala sat diligently and with a faint smile, resting her staff over her legs she let her hand run along the air rune as she whispered, lifting the goat in the air before it slowly fell like a feather. Hopefully this was enough to keep the children's attention for her to quickly summon a sylph and asking it gently to play a few tricks with the children long enough for her to have the runemaster's attention.

- This is what I've achieved so far. I understand it is lacking in balance, but this is a flaw I must overcome myself before I can improve what has already been made. It is a trinity.

The children are delighted by the trick and soon they crowd around the air spirit, pestering it with questions and requests which the sylph answers as patient as it can, the mischeviousness ot shows sometimes delighting the children even more.

Leaning forward the dwarf examines the staff, the placement of runes and he gives a respectful nod, acknowledging her craftsmanship, skills- and also her growth.

"Nothing can be rushed. You work the rnes but you also work with them... use something that is not part of you, try to force them and you invite desaster."

The takes another drag from his pipe.

"I see you understood.... you have to overcome this by yourself. So where will your journey lead you next? Remember there is no right or wrong path as long as it is yours."

Kala closed her eyes briefly, meditating the question.

- There is only a few paths ahead, but I wanted to investigate the Archon who taught the apprentice a part of its knowledge. The other path would be to... learn more about the earth, but it's going to be something difficult.
