Digging On The Consortium Matter

After leaving the Factor, Rhistel went straight back to his desk: Sill had always shown more enthusiasm than him in dealing with everything that involved jinx, so he decided to focus on that other matter in the meantime.

That event everyone referred to as the "Far Realm Invasion" had happened well before his arrival in the Cage, yet, unfortunately for him it was still too recent to find it in books, which meant he had to rely on... living resources.

He still decided to focus on the Consortium first, trying to gather all the information of public domain as a start (even if it meant recurring again to S.I.G.I.S. editions) before digging deeper in the records.
He wanted names to look up, names he could connect to bodies, if needed.
Bodies he could possibly interrogate later.

He then decided to pick up also Factor Charae's files for inspection.
He had no clue what kind of relationship she could have had with that organization, and surely he was not expecting to be able to cross reference names from her personal files, but if something happened between her and that group economically, at least there was a little chance that a discrepancy would show from her financial records.
If not, he still hoped to find other useful information.

He would easily find the following without too much digging

The Consortium is a legitimate mercantile house based out of Tradegate with it's major Hub in Sigil and the Primes. It deals in the importation of raw material, alcohols and textiles from the Primes (into Sigil) and the exportation of Finished goods (Doomguard weapons, Godsmen crafted gear and exotic (planar) inventory) to the Primes. It has a compound in the Hive and a large compound in Undersigil.

It is led by one Charles Goodman, who maintains an apartment in the Clerks ward when in the city. He is known to return to the city once a month to shore up his holdings and meet with shareholders.

One thing he would also note is that the Consortium maintains very close ties with many Fated members all the way up the chain. These Faction members are listed as "investors" and "Advisors" and are paid a legal wage (of times a share) by the Consortium. Their taxes are impeccably listed and paid right down to the green.

For a short time last cycle, it was listed that Charae had been hired to run operations in the Market on behalf of the Consortium. She is listed as having the duties of ensuring all debts to the Consortium (legally incurred in the market ward) were collected and that all Consortium members maintained their contracts. Her employment was short lived. It was ended when she was elevated to Factor in the Mercykillers.

(((The records are probably pretty clean (at least the public and easy to access records are concerned) as it's one of the reason the Consortium maintains such close ties to the Fated. It's an expensive operation to ensure the "proper" records are kept and the needless ones simply vanish.)))

Somewhere close, but in different bureau, one drow sat in quite relaxed position, looking through references materials and taxes reports, which were given certain marking. That marking appeared some time after the Duke's proclamation denouncing former allies which were welcomed in the Halls.

More or less.

That cunning mind, however, was at loss with documentation. Shrewd elaborate writing was not her strong suite, but she fought that weakness with such strength as indomitable will.

There were ideas from which she could start.

Property.

While some mercykillers were not too interested in gaudy estates, one did chose a functioning Spelljammer ship. Once, as Sally, she wanted to get hired there, but was discouraged by owner, who claimed that the ship is full of crew.

Which meant, it is most likely operational or could be classified as ship-themed luxury estate.

Another one of Sodkillers was also known for having a slave, who she proudly shown in front of her associates at marketplace. Tricky business, but worth investigating.

Activities.

Mercykillers were boring sods who killed in the name of justice, or so they claimed. Neverthless, even they had off time from work. Some of them were known to hold trade emporiums with registered brand. This looked interesting.

As the first step, Sillxhistraja concentrated on idea of property and related taxes.

Rhistel reviewed the informations found on the Consortium with little interest.

It was not a big surprise for him to discover that the Fated had their hands in this "legal business", but considering what the Factor was aiming for, that was still going to create some conflict should he decide to proceed.
Get rid of what looked like a profitable alliance to take down a single political enemy. He was not sure this was going to please any of those involved.

As he pondered on the issue, he made a copy of the info regarding Factor Charae's employment and sent it to the attention of Factor Ra'zeth with a short note attached:
wrote:
Careful with this, as for now it means nothing.
Especially since we're the ones certifying for the Consortium legality.
He then left the public records and started researching for the missing parts needed to complete the Consortium picture...
Sure the Takers could have been paid to make something disappear, but he doubted they'd be as shortsighted to just burn those records.
And he was curious to see what they were actually covering for.

A reply was given quickly, unsigned.

"We already overlook enough, it seems," he thought as he pocketed the small note.
In his eyes, that wasn't going to work unless they had something more to offer them, but it could be still worth a try.

Nonetheless, he still needed to know more about that organization before even considering the idea of contacting them, so he proceeded with his research as discreetly as possible.

In terms of information on the consortium, there isn't any further that Rhistel is able to get his hands on.

But one of the names which keeps coming up (as the person who signed off on many of the records Rhistel does find), is that of Aram Oakwright - the Chief Steward of the Hall of Records.

He finally closed the last record and put it in place. He had managed to waste the entire evening on that research, and now it was clear that paper and parchments couldn't help him in what he needed.

Slightly reluctant, he wrote a formal request to Factor Oakwright, asking him for a meeting for the next day, then, after sending it out, he left the Hall to go back home. He needed a couple of hour of sleep, anyway.

"Ah, the Consortium. . . " the dwarf paused for a moment, as though thinking over his response. He took a look at the papers.

"They've been a very profitable investment. VERY profitable. Its always a pleasure dealing with them, and we have a mutual understanding - not to mention quite a few shares in the company.

"Now, Red Death involvement? That's not really the branch of the company I've had many dealings with. It had. . a slightly different focus, you might say."

It turned out that Oakwright had a very busy schedule, and it took several days to get in to see him. When the date finally came, however, Rhistel found himself in line to see the Chief Steward along with a variety of other faction members, all looking incredibly worried about something.

(If Rhistel inquired, he'd hear a few comments about how Oakwright was the one you went to to 'fix' past indiscretions of the paperwork variety.)

Somehow, Rhistel's appointment was only a few minutes late despite the line. Aram was a well-groomed dwarf, with a neat and impressive dark-wood-trimmed office. His desk was littered with a few papers, and one small but conspicuous mini-portrait of his dearly departed cousin, the former Factol Oakwright.

Rhistel was greeted cordially by the dwarf:

"Come in, come in. Have a seat! Now there, what can I do for you today?"
