Law in Sigil – An entry Thesis
Over the last few years it has become apparent that the law in Sigil, mainly the law observed by the other factions, has become largely ignored or tossed aside. From witnessing actions by the Harmonium against the uprising of the people and actions by the Mecrykillers against those in the hive, from attacks on the Harmonium by the Revolutionaries to movements by the Doomguard. We have seen movements by the Indeps to secure territory in the market and the rise of criminal organizations in UnderSigil.
Sensates continue to pollute the city with narcotics and adventurers walk about completely armed as if it is their very right to ignore the will of the Fraternity of Order. It is obvious that the will of the Fraternity, the very rule of law itself, is crumbling.
The rule of law is being ignored and on the cusp of being tossed aside and replaced with the Order of the Harmonium and the Justice of the MecrykillersÂ… both without the clear vision of the fraternity. If this continues on as it is, the very fabric of society is at risk of collapsing into total anarchy.
Can this be stopped?
One must look at the core problems to honestly answer that question. The factions of this city have taken to thinking that their philosophies are more important than the law of the city. The Harmonium routinely ignores Fraternity jurisdiction in their lust for Order. The Mecrykillers act upon their own authority when apprehending suspected criminals. The other factions regularly show a complete disregard for the laws that maintain civility in Sigil. Right down to the independent adventurer. They choose to do as they please, when they please, in complete disregard for the law.
This needs to change.
The Fraternity is the founder of Law in the city of Sigil and it needs to make this clear. They need to look over the laws the city currently has, the deals and agreements they hold with other factions and groups and they need to evaluate their worth and strength. The fraternity needs to close the loopholes the other factions use against them and they need to ensure the law is upheld by all. The Fraternity needs to work harder to remove those who threaten the very fabric of law whether those are rebellious voices in the street or stubborn Namers in allied factions. The Fraternity needs to show the city that the law will be applied to all and that all must obey the law, for without adherenceÂ… the law means nothing.
