The Gentlest Cut wrote:Before you is Sigil, cast in its eerie twilight, a bit past Peak. The day is smoggy, lightly choking, the sooty taste of chimney smoke is on your tongue. You smack your lips to banish it, but it remains. You stand in the Square of the Tin Cup, it’s white marble cobbles catching the light and reflecting it over the faces of those around you. Your shoulders are tense, and painful. Maybe you slept on them wrong?

Matching the sooty air is a woman standing before, a slim, attractive fire genasi – an ember in the haze, smile dancing like the flame that birthed it. In her hand she holds an intricately etched battleaxe, catching the blaze of a fire behind you – shadows dancing along its etching, creating new patterns in their wake. The genasi’s smile widens, but there’s no malice in it… If anything, there’s playfulness.

She hefts the axe, and you make no motion to move, to dodge. Your body tenses, your will and your mind fight the raw instinct to save your own life. The bitter, blood-like taste of adrenaline forms in your mouth. You carefully keep your fear suppressed, stuffing it down in your gut. It’s a good distraction, as the battleaxe swings at your neck…

And it takes purchase, you feel your flesh parting. But there’s no pain. There’s not even the hint of discomfort, just the odd sensation of flesh and bone parting. No blood exists the wound, no warm, wet, sticky dribble. Following in its wake, is a flush of warmth that fills your flesh – like the sun on a pleasant summer day. It runs through your veins, it rushes blood to your head.

The warmth rushes to your shoulders, and you feel them relax. Relief floods you as the pain recedes. The genasi keeps smiling at you, as she removes the axe from you neck. Your head is on your shoulders. You feel fine.

You feel better than you did before you were almost beheaded.
