To get around Use Magic Device necessarity there is always possibility of getting Brewed Potions with Shield spell, and there is at least one such PC around. *pokes Alain*

Brooch of Shielding or similar items with death ward / freedom of movement or any long lasting powerful beneficial spells will be avoided would they be use # of times per day.

It generally goes down to these:
Single handed weapon + shield = more defense.
- Balanced and safe route most of the times.
Two handed without shield = more damage.
- 1,5 times more effect from strength.
- twice the bonus from power attacks.
Two weapons = more attacks.
- Less damage on the off-hand from strength.
- Good for using pre-existing damage sources to inflict them multiple times and fast. (such as sneak attack / buff based extra damages)

They each have their own benefits over other, although for not all kinds of builds are they as clearly visual.

If you "pay" with a single level of Sorcerer, Wizard or Bard you can use all wands and scrolls of all the spells in those classes' list too. It might not be ultra hardcore RP but since you pay with a full level for it with all the problems that brings, I don't think it's an exploit either.

^ And if you in addition pick the Practiced Spellcaster feat, then the dodgy first level spells turn out to be little less dodgy. For example, the shield spell in question would have a caster level of five, which is the equilevant of what you would get from a Shield Wand - this view is based on the "OC" wand crafting.

From a role-playing point of view one could argue how even though she is not the greatest wizard around and in fact quite far from it, she has mastered the little magical aptitude she has.

But on the other hand:
Uhn, one level dib and getting the 20% experience penalty from it? If that dib is taken early enough it is much worse than the unmodified ECL +3-race when it comes down to the overall amount experience you need to gain in order to reach the level 30.

If you ask me, the problems caused by going that route that far exceed the benefits it brings forth. Getting the Able Learner feat and spending the points in Use Magic Device skill is in my opinion the far less painful route if you have the spare points.

Thus in the end, I may have not gotten the Bracers of Shielding I so desired. But rest assured, I will have the AC boost one way or another. To be frank; and so can you. ^_^

Perhaps this already exists, but if so, I have not discovered it.

I would like a way to join a faction after having been in Sigil for a while.

When Deri first arrived in Sigil, she was Clueless. She is still mostly clueless, but she is working hard to fit in. Eventually, she will probably want to join a faction. (She is almost certainly a Sensate, I think. She wants to see and experience everything!)

I tried talking to the mirmir in the OOC area as well as the Factotum in the Hall of Records, and I did not see an option to join after the fact. Is there a way to do this?

It actually might be a fun little quest thing for players to join a faction after they have been in Sigil for a while, but if the playerbase gets large, it would have the potential to tie up a lot of time.

Well, currently I've at least planned to have DM event to handle joining a faction in game, but eventually we're also planning on having own NPC to handle recruiting to each faction, but as we at the current point don't have even all the faction headquarters made... <.<

We've mentioned this elsewhere, but I think this is the better thread, being a wish list

Char bio editor please :) nice to be able to self-edit as char develops over time.

1# Bracers of Shielding. Same thing as Bracers of Armor but with Shield enchantment bonus instead that of Armor.

2# Hideous Blow that wouldn't be so hideous. Currently you need to target a monster in order to use it. Thus you spend one round standing next to the foe while casting it, and the following rounds trying to make it connect. Simply being able to cast it on yourself would make the invocation far more usuable.

- Cast it, run around, hit a monster with it.

3# A way to learn new languages. As far as I know the only way to learn new languages is to pester a DM about it. I ask this because I would prefer one of my character capable of speaking and understand almost any language you could hear in Sigil.

The character has a high intelligence, so he already knows a lot languages, but more couldn't harm.

(Books that grant you new languages, book merchant in the great bazaar?)

On the first part: I think the toolset allows only 'armor' AC to come from the bracers/gloves, exception of one Obsidian made which gives deflection AC.

Second part: We actually do have warlock buddy in, but... 1.23 version broke it <.< we're waiting a fix for this from the maker in nwvault to add it in again. And agree, hideous blow is terrible on its current state, cool looking... but terrible.

Third part: While an automatic system would be indeed intriguing, I also have to admit that it would kind of easily lead to everyone knowing each languages, which would rather make the language system redundant.

This is also not an item that exists by lore, and probably for a good reason (though I think there are "animated shields" in pen&paper that basically give shield AC without needing a hand free). If you want shield AC and do not have a hand free, use scrolls of the Shield spell, cast the spell yourself, or learn wand crafting and use a Shield wand.

Doesn't the shield spell give the ac bonus to deflection, and not shield?

Either way, being able to give non-shield wielders some shield bonus sort of defeats the purpose of choosing between 2 handers and sword and board. Doesn't it?
