As the trial date comes closer and seeing there are still positions to be filled Caterina sends a letter to The Bureau of courts.

I have noticed that there is currently no judge assigned to the trial of case JV6879B that of the defendant Luisiani.  I have being following the cases development closely and would like to volunteer myself for the role.  Bureau Chief IV Garen Seph currently of your Bureau can vouch for my legal knowledge and abilities in relation to this case.

Bureau Chief Seph would, of course, support the AdministratorÂ’s request to preside over the Trial. Should official paperwork cross his desk, he would sign off on it. He would otherwise pay no attention to the details of the trial in case it went to appeal and ended up on his docket.

Both Hasclaan's and Caterina's requests are duly processed, and after a few days they are informed that their requests have been granted. Hasclaan was asigned as Luisiani's lawyer, and Caterina as the judge of the case.

Both were inundates days later with yet more letters from concerned parties.

Among these letters was a reply to Hasclaan's inquiries:

From the Sensates:
wrote: Dear Administrator Guunt,

As you are Luisiani's defense, I can tell you that the day before the murder, she viewed a particular sensory stone. This stone has since been removed from our public sensorium because of its apparent adverse effects on her health.

I believe that she received a type of compulsion from the store, which caused her to act out violently. I would be willing to testify to this as my professional opinion.

It is because of the compulsory effect she experienced that we requested she be returned to the Society - I do not believe that she is deserving of punishment from the Mercykillers, or that the Bleakers are qualified to help her. Thus, either outcome of the trial is doing her a grave disservice.

Please let me know if there's anything else I can do to help.

Sincerely,

Factotum Elena d'Isaur
No letter arrived from the Bleakers, but a slightly disturbed looking individual did show up at Luisiani's holding cell claiming to be her designated doctor from the Gatehouse. Luisiani strongly protested seeing him.

He left assuring everyone he ran into that it was his professional opinion that he was quite mad. The name he gave for the official paperwork was Gerrard, and he said it in such a way as though everyone should just know who he was.

A10 Alathusra's motion (detailed above) is therefore forwarded to Caterina. While she is waiting for that motion to be processed, she reaches out to the family of the victim, offering her sympathies and imploring them to direct any witnesses or evidence they might be able to legitimately produce (or, it is implied, any they might be able to fabricate) in her direction.

Caterina responds to the request from the prosecution and a letter soon finds its way to Alathusra.

In regard to your request I cannot render a guilty verdict without a trial.  Regardless of how straight forward the case may seem legal protocol must be observed.

However should you wish to hold a preliminary meeting with the defence counsel who at this time is Administrator VI Hasclaan Gunt in order to discuss a settlement or a plea bargain that would save both the Fraternity's time and public money that would be not only acceptable but desirable.

Please keep me appraised of any developments.

wrote: Factotum d'Isaur,

thank you for your letter.

I will call you as a witness to testify on your Faction Member's behalf. If we can show that the accused has been influenced by an outside source we might be able to avert the worst.

Hasclann Guunt, A6

He then looks through the records for one of the authorized Experts the Fraternity uses when it comes to cases of possession and mind control and he will present this case to said expert and invite him or her to take a look at the accused.

A10 Alathusra sends off a missive to A6 Gunt in short order, hoping to bring a speedy resolution to the trial stage of the proceedings.

A response is sent quickly- as are several other letters.

One of them is for the Festhall again:
wrote: Factotum d'Isaur,

I need to know what kind of experience is stored in the Sensory Stone you have mentioned and who else has accessed them in the last few weeks.

Thank you for your cooperation,

Hasclaan thanks the doctor and notifies her that her expertise will be needed at the trial as he will call upon her in his defence of the accused.

He also asks if any clues about what might have caused the compulsion in question and he will tell her about the sensory stone that contains the experience about the Memnur Scroll.

Then another letter follows:
wrote: Factotum d'Isaur,

thank you for your quick response.

You mentioned other Sensates who have seen this stone and I want to ask you if they would forward written reports about what they witnessed and also about how this experience influenced them.

I want to compare those to the information gained from the accused and so perhaps be able to prove that is was the Scroll's influence and not her own murderous intents that led to the killing.

The Alandrises send Alathusra the names of several witnesses in short order -
- Nicholai (no last name) - a street vendor who says he saw Luisiani in an altercation with Lord Alandris the day before the murder.
- Candelaria Fortis, Hegmind Stinsel, and Kyle O'Velimond - who all witnessed the murder itself. Candelaria was the closest.

Nicholai and Candelaria in particular are glad to tell Alathusra all about how Luisiani seemed enraged at poor Lord Alandris. Nicholai says he heard the Sensate woman berating Alandris the night before, saying things like "But you promised to pay me three weeks ago!" and "You'll regret this!"

Naturally the family has no idea why Luisiani would have been demanding money.

Meanwhile, on the request of Administrator Guunt, Doctor Omartha of the Fraternity went to see Luisiani. Her official report was that the Sensate was currently in her right mind - though very very distraught over the entire business. However, her description of the events did correspond closely to other cases of mental compulsion.

And finally, Factotum d'Isaur wrote back to Hasclaan. . .
wrote: Dear Administrator Guunt,

The sensory stone in question contains "a vision given to a werewolf by a Scroll of Mnemur." Before we removed it to the private sensorium, several dozen people viewed it, and the results were mixed. Most of them are fine, however we had our concerns about its effects on the minds of a few others.

None of the other viewers have caused any public disturbance. Luisiani had the strongest reaction.

Sincerely,

Factotum Elena d'Isaur
