I Bought Some 4e Books

I gotta agree with the burn it sentiments. I have played d&d for nearly 20 years and was appalled by the detritus they had the nerve to call D&D. I bought the player's hand book, gave it the twice over, then dropped into a box in the basement.

I think that the game of dungeons and dragons was pretty much fubared when WoTC took it over and started selling a book a month. Nothing like sitting down at the table to play when two of your player's are clamoring to use stuff from books you never saw before, let alone read.

I don't think we need worry about NWN3 being a 4e game, by the time the mess between Atari and Hasbro is settled there will most likely be a fifth edition of the game they ruined to base the engine on.

I pretty much agree with the entire burn it, bury it, salt the earth comments about 4th Edition. - With exception to a couple of neat things regarding Wizards.

Being able to have infinite uses of the limited but useful cantrips such as Prestidigitation/Mage Hand is interesting, but 3.5 also incorporates that sort of ability in Reserve Feats (Complete Mage?)

I've just found it odd, A level 20 caster has more uses of his level 9 spells than he does the minor level 0 spells (Cantrips) Easily resolved with House-rules, but still.

LOL honestly do you think there will be a 5th edition. And heck since they botched 4th so badly will anyone really buy it. Of course I've read some of the new FgR books that have been printed. I'm not to big on how things turned out but everything changes just because if they didn't everything would just stay the same and nothing interesting would happen.

And ya 4th felt really pc game stylish from the looks of it. I read a few in the local book store and just got completely lost the system was so totally alien to me.

Of course you know 5th edition will be a redeeming attempt or its gonna make 4th edition look really GOOD!. As if that's even possible but WoTC will try. Sadly the creator of DnD is spinning in his grave. I would if i was him.

I love 4E. I've done two campaigns with it, and it's fun right from the Get-Go, at level one. Additionally, there is a lot of room to tweak and change your character as you go, so no worries about having to build your character far in advance just to survive encounters later in the campaign.

Also, everything is made quite simple and straightforward for beginners. Unlike 3/3.5E, 4E is the kind of game that you can sit down to with a bunch of folks completely fresh to PnP, and give them something that they can start playing that very same night.

I love it. I thought the flavor changes were nice too.

For those that complain about it's lack of versatility, I would suggest that is only because they haven't come out with as many books for it as they have for 3.5E yet. That's normal and natural. Given the same years of play time, it can offer as many if not more options.

Agreed. 4ed is bad. I see it as a way to turn DnD into some sort WoW. I do not like it at all.

Actually admittably my greatest problem with 4th edition and 3rd-3.5 edition is that they lack flavour text. I'd say 4th edition even more, it seems like flavour is no longer part of the game, now stats is taking over. I understand that players are the ones that makes the roleplaying, but shouldn't the flavour be the main concentration since it's what inspires the players in the right mood. After compairing 2nd edition and 3rd edition books I just noticed very dinstinct difference where in 2nd edition you could see many (not all) quotes and rules explained like characters told them, in 3rd edition they're just stated shortly and bluntly, even more so in 4th edition. 2nd edition source books actually made me feel inspired to roleplay and give me ideas... 3rd edition and 4th edition does a little as well, but most things I just have to improvise since they don't really offer much info :P

I think my biggest problem is lore changes...

1st ed to 2nd ed - barbarians and acrobats don't exist, but here's how you make something you can call the same as a fighter or rogue

2nd ed to 3rd ed - sorcerers arrive without any warning... ok can handle that, or ignore them, no problem

3ed to 4ed - whole planes cease to exist, completely new planes appear without any lore other than "fey live there", previous celestials turn into lesser player race, gnomes turns into monsters, whole structure of the multiverse changes... explanations for it in lore: none, it's just been that way always it seems...

So converting a sane 3ed campaign to 4ed is about as simple as converting a game of tic-tac-toe to shadowrun...

I had a hard time moving from version to version. Started with Basic D&D (remember the bright red box with the solid red dice?). Then moved to Expert (blue box this time... but fairly confusing...). Played "Advanced Dungeons and Dragons" (wasn't widly known as AD&D... most folks just refered to it as "advanced") for a LOT of years. A buddy of mine got me to play 2nd edition and I grew to like that over time... Have zero experience in 3rd edition (unless you count this game) but from what I've heard, and read, thus far (about 4e)... not interested in the least... It just seems that they're trying way too hard to equate it with video games in an effort to draw kids away from their Xboxes long enough to spend some coin on some books. Like most WoTC efforts they'll dump a lot of addons into the market that will be nothing more than half hearted attempts to wrest more cash for folks...

Nope... I think 2nd edition is as new as I get in Tabletop...

... and yes... I know I'm old :sleepy:
