(((He doesn't have to see all of it. It was just what he was striving to do. Feel free to limit his field of vision. His main objective was to keep an eye on his companions and as much as the surrounding street (and visible) rooftops as possible.))

//So is he trying to: "find a position where he could see the house, rooftops and allentries/exits from the street." Which would to my mind at least require some kind of height advantage or is he just covering his companions with a bow? At the moment I do not understand which.

//I have no idea of the dimensions of the street, how cluttered it is, how many people there are, exits, entries, etc. I simply said what he's "trying" to do. As DM, it's up to you to decide, based on your vision of the area, how successful he is.
Again... he's not leaving the street level. He'd look awful stupid sitting on a rooftop, out in the open, with a dog.

//I am well aware of what I need to do as a dm.
You as a player need to be more specific if there are things your character will not do in order
to achieve their goals like leaving street level, which seems the best way to get a view of a rooftop, which is obviously going to be above street level. Or the view of a house in a built up area whilst maintaining a distance.

//viewing a rooftop does not mean hovering above the street looking down at the rooftops. It means looking up and seeing if there are snipers or other threats. It is done from ground level. Without proper description of the surroundings, players can only tell you what they want to do and you have to fill in the blanks with how you envision the stage you have set.
That being said, again, heÂ’s at ground level watching his companions and as much of the surrounding area, including anyone who might be sitting on the rooftops, as he can manage.

Thist watches the group stagger over to Norman and coozy up a bit before he says anything.
"Say friend. I have another pint for you and your friends if you can tell us when the last time you saw anyone enter or leave this house?" He fishes inside his robes and palms a single gold coin.

The street is narrow and the houses are tall. The road curves off out of sight around a corner. The drunk continues to answer the questions looking from Norman to Thist. He slurs still and whistles through a noticeable gap in his teeth.
"Trouble makersh!? I'll shay! They asked me to make a blade for them a few weeksh ago. They took it and shhkiped town. That was two weekshh ago!"
