The Longest Night

John would find tracks and even wheel ruts indicating a population centre near by. As they skirt around it they would see lights cast over the ramshackle buildings. The smell of food and the chance of a night in a proper bed must be tempting especially for the likes of Thist and Norman who would not be used to sleeping rough. Empty secure hovels are easier to find though, and might be safer, but not nearly as rewarding.

Norman follows John, staying close as he could get easily lost in a place like this- nothing he had seen before had really prepared him.
Noticing the signs of 'civilization' he relaxes a bit- but only for a moment then he realizes where they are, who those locals might be.
Nevertheless he asks in a hopeful voice: "An inn, perhaps?"

John replies, keeping his voice low and concentrating on his surroundings
"Inns are tempting but hard to get out of if the locals decide to visit in the middle of the night. I've been in enough hostile towns to know... the best defence is a quick escape route. If we can get a room that fits the bill, we can opt for that but still sleep in shifts. If it's too risky, I suggest we simply find a less travelled shadow and curl up for the night."

John nods and begins to scout the area looking for a safe, yet easilly defensible, place. Once found, there would be no fire to warm them and only cold rations to eat. The wounded would get priority space to rest. Odds are John would only require limited rest for a period of several days before tiring (a matter of a few hours a night of sleep due to his profession) so would tell both casters to sleep. He would set up a few quiet alarms in the area (loud enough to alert him yet quiet enough to not draw attention). He would wake them after the 8 hours pass and get what rest he could during that time, sleeping lightly while sitting up, bow across his lap.

They find a derelict house with a back door and a good view of the area. John manages to make several alarms although with the materials at hand it is difficult to speak for their quality. Luckily this is never tested, and a very nervous night where every shadow and sound could bring death passes without incident. The spires dim light breaking over Plague Mort. The twisted slum dominated by the towering keep looks more horrific in the light.

When given the all clear, Thist carefully sets down Ben and rubs the dogs nose to make sure his is comfortable. After a few off remarks about clean sheets and a warm tub he settles down for the night, taking out his spell book and memorizing spells for the next day.
He volunteers for the first watch.

When Norman wakes up he performs his morning prayers, greeting a new sun even in places like this one, then meditates to regain his spells.
He offers to refill the waterskins again then spends two spells to heal himself and Ben.
(( Same SL as before but add a 2nd Align Weapon instead of Calm Emotions. Spells cast: 2x Cure Light wounds (5th caster level) ))
