I find that when players say 3.x is so abusable and use that as an argument that it needs to be fixed, I just wonder if they actually play/dm campaigns or are just rule mongerers... For I've yet to encounter a DM who when I say "Yeah I want to play this Sarrukh shifter build" has said "ok sure, it's in the rules, I'll let you make a completely silly character that can defeat anything without a challenge"... more likely he'd laugh in my face and slap me with an xp penalty for even suggesting it...

Ok maybe I'm used to more harsh DM's than others... but the point is, no system is more broken than the DM allows it to be, as long as the base system itself works well, and I feel 3.x does this.

Well, we had most of the source books from various sources *ducks for cover*, and the players kept nagging me about this and that. Then I just nodded with an evil grin, and waited for them to finish their ueberkillerbadguys. And then I took the cat o' nine tails out of the closet, and checked the MM 3 :) And smiled all the way as they super builds struggled through the whole campaign. So I'd say abuse is pretty possible on both sides.

Though most of the time it is about fun, so I only made sensible restrictions, but if they tried something funny with say a Tempest or something.. they got what was coming to them.

one of the most abusive builds I remember was.

16+Monk
5 Druid
2 war shaper http://www.associatepublisher.com/e/w/wa/warshaper.htm

with the feat vow of poverty.
1st ac +4
2nd bonus exalted feat
3. ac bonus +5 endure elements
4rd exalted strike +1(magic) bonus exalted feat
5 sustenance
6 ac bonus +6 deflection +1 bonus exalted feat
7 resistance 1 ability score enhancement +2
8 natural armour +1, mind shielding, bonus exalted feat
9 ac bonus +7
10 exalted strike +2(good), damage reduction 5/magic, bonus exalted feat
11 ability score +4/+2
12 ac bonus +8 deflection +2, greater sustenance, bonus exalted feat
13 resistance +2, energy resistance 5
14 exalted strike +3, freedom of movement, bonus exalted feat
15 ac bonus +9 ability score +6/+4/+2 greater damage reduction 5/evil

etc.

Biggest disadvantage is you have to physically hit things to hurt them. Also such a vow might suck if a high magic world but if a low magic nothing lost.

This pretty much sums up my feelings about 4e.

unless every character in the party can fart disintegrate. You might as well say something like the gnome when facing something like that.

Kinda like Hannibal.

Scared ugly man who Hannibal accidentally let live. After describing how he was going to kill him "I bet you wish you had killed me now.".

Hannibal all calm, "no, No I like you just as you are".
