In the beginning.

In the year of 1355DR, on the fourth day of Hammer, inside a large cave on the face of the great mountain Kelvin's Cairn a baby orc was born. This orc was born to a tribe no bigger than thirty six and at birth he was already different, bearing bright blue eyes as opposed to the common orange or red. This was uncommon but not an abnormality. The orc was named Daverish Gilbrock. Daverish, traveled far and wide with his tribe, the never stayed in one area for too long. They traveled from the icy ridged lands of Icewind Dale and back to their homelands of Tann, also known as The Hordelands. However, poor Daverish wouldnÂ’t get a chance to see the homeland. After living three years in their cave, after DaverishÂ’s birth they made way for their usual campsite in the High Forest. All was well, they flourished just on the outskirts of the Dire Woods. They stayed for about three years, till they departed once more headed for Tann. However, they werenÂ’t as lucky this time, their small tribe of now thirty eight came to a standstill with a roaming Hill Giant....

The Tragedy.

The hill giant was a formidable foe for them as they've never seen much battle and let alone face something of this size and strength. They attacked in swarm, Daverish's father trailing in back. They seemed to be doing well until the giant grabbed one of the near by trees and flung it a the group. Most of them dodged it, while five were smashed beneath it. They all looked to their dead knowing nothing could be done. Retreat was out of the question at this point and the battle was long fought. Daverish's mother and the other women ran and hid in the forest, along with the children. Slowly but surely they watched in horror as each of the orcs fell to the might of the giant. The giant badly wounded, limped off leaving the women and children alive. The mothers knew not what to do, the searched the battlefield for their dead and wept in sorrow. After what seemed to be only a few hours, a band of mis-matched fellas came strolling up. A few of them were orcs in fact, so they spoke to them and it turns out that the hill giant was something they were hunting down. The men grinned from ear to ear realizing all their men had fallen in the battle they seized the women. Some fought back, they were quickly killed, thus setting an exampling and making the giving in alot easier. Most of the children were left abandoned, Daverish was such one...

The Capture.

Left alone to fend for themselves the children would not last long. Try as they might they couldn't kill anything big enough to feed them all. There were only five left at this point, Daverish, a life long play mate Gugrah, his older sister Samanish, Bargag just a year old baby boy and last the one who basicaly elected himself leader cause he was the oldest Grashavc. Samanish was only five years Daverish's senior, Grashavc only two years over that. Daverish and Gugrah were of the same age. They built make shift tents to help protect against rain. They still had all their gear from the assault but none of them knew how to set up proper tents. Now living off of vegetables and small kills like rabbits would've been fine. However, Bargag was still in the milk feeding stage. Bargag would do nothing but cry day in and day out for up to two weeks. No matter what the others tried to feed him he wouldn't eat. The baby was no doubt starving to death. Daverish and Gugrah didn't quite understand what what was going on. Grashavc and Samanish did however. One morning before Daverish or Gugrah awoke, Grashavc had happend upon Bargag, he was as cold as ice and stiff as Ironwood. He swiped him up and ran out to a near by lake. There he tossed the body into the calm waters. Daverish and Gugrah naturally asked where he was, though no reply was ever given. They'd continued on with their lives, hunting, gathering. As the days turned to weeks and the weeks to months. Soon enough a few years had passed, Five to be exact. Grashavc now eighteen was more brash and bold than any of the rest. He took Samanish as his mate with some objection from her but she gave in. Grashavc left one day returning with odd things that they've never seen before. What they didn't know is that Grashavc had been traveling to a near by town. This attracted attention from a group of bandits who had followed him to the camp, they quickly pounced on the group of orcs. Grashavc fighting off what he could to no avail, he was slain in the process. Gugrah, Daverish and Samanish stared around looking to the many that surrounded them...

The Number.

The surrounding men seized the three young orcs. Taking them quite easily. They were thrown in a wagon and began a journey to a nearby town. In this wagon were various other children. A few dwarfs, gnomes, elves and even a young minotaur. Each of them bound in shackles and couldn't communicate with the other races. The wagon ride was quiet, other than the shouting from the bandits that captured them. The wagon had arrived at the destination. One by one the young ones were unloaded off the wagon. They looked around each of the children struck with awe as this place was what looked to be a huge stadium. They were quickly nudged along and pushed into what looked like a forge. It even came with its own dwarf. A rather large dwarf, he was cooling and reheating a sword as they came in. The bandits spoke to the dwarf shouting over the thunderous blows from his hammer to the anvil. "I've got some more for you to mark!" he said. The dwarf nodded, as they children were pushed his direction. The dwarven children went first. It didn't even phase the blacksmith to brand his own kin. They yelled and screamed as he lay a molten hot dagger on their arm, carving out numbers. Even if the others couldn't speak each others language. Pain is universal. Next up where the two elves. They were alot older than the rest and bigger too. The first one put up a struggle, while the second one tried to make a dash for a weapon. That was when the blacksmith drew his hammer and smashed the elves knees. Moving faster than you'd think him too move, he caught up to the other elf, quickly obliterating his skull. He then gave the branding to the one left alive. The minotaur didn't put up a fight, nor did he even yelp at the branding. Next up was our lovely orc trio. Gugrah was first, yelling and hollering though the pain. Daverish second, jerking his arm as the number was carved in but to no avail. Samanish last, she yelled and screamed and in a flash of pain she headbutted the dwarf. Hardly phasing him he just chuckled. The ones that remained, were thrown into what seemed like jail cells. They each muttered to one another. When Daverish was asked.."So what number did you get." He looked and said.."Fourty Six."..

The Odd Thing.

Why were they given numbers? After wallowing in their cell for over a week or so each one of the young children were moved to a bigger cell. Which contained more children with numbers carved in their arms. Each of the children seemed to stay within their own little clique. Then something odd happened. Around noon a man dressed in robes came in to the room, he had with him a chair and a huge brown bag. He placed the chair in the middle of the room and sat in it. Every child lay silent as he stared at them. He then spoke to each child, in their own language! He would then pull out a book and hand it to them. Instructing them to read it and learn it. He did this for months. Making sure the progress of each child's was on track. For some weird reason he was teaching them all how to speak like the humans do, in common. It got to the point to where every child could speak perfect common without a single stutter or accent. Almost erasing their other language. He then went around and changed everyone's name. Samanish became Sam, Gugrah became Greg and Daverish became Dave..

What is the reasoning?

After leaning the proper common language, how weirder could it get? Well soon after learning common all the young adults were returned back to their cells. They were fed twice a day, regularly. Some days they could hear what they thought was large rain falling from the sky and hitting the ground over and over again. Yet when they looked out through the small hole in their cell, it was as clear as any other day. Then one day, a huge guard clad in silver and gold armor came up to Dave's cell. The man seemed to have his eyes wander each person in there, from Dave to Greg, from Greg to Sam, from Sam to one of the dwarves. The man then nodded and yelled for them to bring the dwarf out. Then not but two hours after the sound of the rain came back. Over a period of a year or what seemed to be a year. The people who the silver man took, never came back. Except for Bob. Bob was the name given to the young minotaur. He came back with tales of battle he seemed to preach the fact that their were tons of people just beyond a few hallways. He told them about how he had been forced to fight a fully armored soldier and fought long and hard as the crowd seemed to cheer and jeer as the battle raged. He told them that all the others had died on the arena floor and that we were all being tested for something....
