She ran. What choice? Benny-Boy had been taken out by the black-smith orc in a couple of hits while unprepared. Too much sarcastic chit chat between them and the orcs had heard them coming.

She ran. She stood no chance. She managed to lodge a couple of fire arrows into his body through chinks in his armour but he kept up his pursuit of her, along with two of his side-kicks. Benny-boy was lost, she was on her own.

At the next corner, she hid to an alcove, hoping they would not spot her – but they did. She darted out before they were completely atop her but the edge of the black-smith's axe caught her arm and she yowled in pain. This distracted her and instead of taking the route towards the stairs upwards, she turned down the right tunnel and immediately pulled up on seeing three more bulky shapes some feet away.

Damn

She was trapped. A bludgeoning blow to her head from behind and she saw stars, twisted and crumpled to the ground.

''We getz good price fer diz one eh boss? She make good womanz slave to dem Tusks''

Rith slowly came to to hear the grunting comment of one of her orcish captors, and swore under her breath as the thumping in her skull raged. She took stock of her situation as quickly as her brain allowed in the circumstances.

Bars. She could see bars. Figures of two, maybe three orcs on the other side. Her arm and head hurt massively. Her chivs were no longer attached to her belt, nor did she have hold of the new bow Benny-boy had bought her – her distrust of his intentions all faded in the scheme of things compared to her current situation.

Crap, all her things had been taken.

She blinked, attempting to restore a measure of normality to her vision and perspective.

This was serious.

She waited. In the dark of the cell, her eyes growing more accustomed now and her impaired vision on account of that head blow returning.

One guard, shuffling down the end of the corridor, not close. The others had left. A glance across to to the opposite cell. Empty. But she could just make out the edge of a bow, one fire arrow sticking out of quiver. Her things had been dumped there. Good.

She rose slowly, carefully and knelt by the lock of the cell, tested it. Orcs were dumb, but not that dumb to leave it unlocked. Locked.

She reached for her hair, for her trusted pin. Damn. She made search upon the floor of the cell for it, but to no avail. Lost.

She smirked. No, all was not lost. Her fingers moved then beneath her hair, to her right ear and carefully removed one silver stud, unhinged the 'tail' and slipped it out. She clicked it into place and there – her second trusty lockpick. Small, but sturdy. Normally used for finer work but would have to do in the circumstances. Ensuring the guarding orc was still far down the corridor she make quick work of the lock holding the chains about the cell door bars. The only problem was keeping the noise of the chains loosening from the ears of the guard. She still had her cloak, took it off and bundled it about the chains to muffle the sound of their movement.

The lock turned. Neat. The chains slipped in the bundle and she lowered them to the ground, tested the bar door. A slight creak of sound but nothing too much. Taking cloak from about the chains, she slipped out and hugged the edges of the wall, looking down the corridor, then to the cell with her things.

Another pick of lock later and she had those back also, to her relief. With the darkness to her advantage, it did not take her long either to edge past the patrolling guard at the end of the cells corridor and slowly make her way out and up to the surface.

She gave brief thought then to Benny-boy wondering if the orcs had returned to check on his body after coming after her, but then she shrugged. She had not seen him in the cells. He was probably dead. She turned her thoughts to getting mended, tended, fed and rested and turned towards the public baths to clean up first.

She met him there, in the baths, cleaned up, mended, sauna-ed, eased muscle pain then swapped simple stories of who had had it worse.

They went back later that day. To search for the hair pin. A trusty special craft that she was loath to lose.

Needle in a haystack

Maybe. Somewhere between the vault and the smithy, she reckoned. But more likely, the orcs had taken it. It was valuable enough to any who was down on their luck and shiney enough to capture interest of orc eye if spotted; silver with a small simple gem fastened into a clasp on the end. More important to her, was the shape, link and hook that took to locks easily in the right hands.

Yea she wanted it back.

From vault and lower they both searched the dark tunnels and ground for the 'pin'.

This time, they kept their sarcastic tones at whisper, ceasing their jibes as they neared the smith's. This time, they caught the orcs and the blacksmith by surprise. His skillful song hurt, pierced eardrum and made it easier to cut through. When the final moan of dying orc receded, the pair searched the shelves, tables, bodies and benches for the small piece of silver.

Soddin' hammerfisted cretins she exclaimed upon seeing the bashed piece laying to the smith's bench. The length had been hammered, smashed and bent. The small gem prised from its clasp, the clasp lay crushed and only half attached.

He knew someone who was skillful in metal work and forge...perhaps she might help, he suggested.

Worth a shot she shrugged.

On returning to the market place he introduced her to the girl. Emiko. A soddin' priestess who took one look at her, heard her request, saw her broken 'tool' of 'locksmith's' trade and had her pinned as a piece of dirt and involved in shadyside of the business, refused to fix it until I know you better.

Its just a soddin' lockpick

Rith was pissed.

She'd find a proper craftsperson who could handle the small delicate work of toolcraft than weaponcraft, someone less fussy, fewer qualms, who didn't 'need' to 'know' you first, less 'proper'.

Cheeky sod

Tempting her with something she wanted in exchange for a cheek kiss. She'd show him. Yea, she could have done it, would have done more for them were it not his attitude like he knew. Sod that for a lark.

Price of a small kiss for that fine pair of curved beauties. Lady luck seemed to shine on that one. Intervention indeed. She reckoned they just dropped into his hands all sweet like after a flirt with some girl enchanter, that quirky smile and a little patter with that smooth voice of his and plop, not even anything he liked to use. What the hells was he up to?

So yea, she was suspicious.

One request Benny-boy She got him to go somewhere more 'discrete', not looked over, a quiet alley.

He gave her one of them, but held on to the second.

Close your eyes Benny-boy, hands behind back he complied.

Suuure, he would have given her both if she'd wanted, he said. Didn't have to do anything she didn't want to do. Yea right. Well she 'wanted' to do this. But wasn't gonna be a kiss, oh no. Cheeky sod.

We made a deal already. I don't renege on a deal She lied.

And then she bit him.

She bit him on the ear.

A sharp bite down, enough to make mark, make him squeal, think twice, not to break skin and she made off with that chiv.

He set new condition for the second chiv.

One she would not contemplate.

He made play of her words, twisted them, suggesting removal of the 'aint' in her sentence would bring her close to satisfying that condition - to apologise, requiring her to say she was 'very very sorry' in front of the crowd.

Not that any were listening, they were all wrapped up in themselves, busy.

But grovel? To him? For the second? No way.

She got one. She was ahead, quids in. Whether given or obtained via that half-deal attempt. It was all the same.

We're done, fairs fair to lady luck and her lovers...was nice knowing you Benny-boy, feck...

The crowd was heaving.

I'm outta here

She had gold to find, scrimp and steal. More in the market meant more empty houses. She wasn't so good at the pick pocketting malarky.

The blind man would only wait so long for to come up with the necessaries for those boots and 'uniform' he was hawking.

She gave up the ruby to the dwarf Kharan in the end having first told him it was just red glass. Twice he and that bugger Benny-boy had saved her ass, dragged it back to the mortuary for the zombies to stitch her back together. It was hard to feel obliged to another.

She managed to get one over on Benny-boy when he was unconscious though on that slab too. Nudged a zombie his way, spoke sweetly while he was still out of it and got him to think it was her cuddling him. Heh...she enjoyed watching the result of that one. Small bit of payback for his cheek but it was something.

Still the next time they met she traded fair, swapping shield for cloak. Though it seemed he'd gone up in the 'verse now exploring finer planes and places, likely more valuable 'pickins' to be made there than the sewers she still ran in.

Perhaps she could persuade Kharan to use his stout bulk again to show her them sights. He was easier to handle, straight forward, not pokin' his nose in where it didn't belong, so long as she didn't lie to him. So yea, giving him that ruby might have been the better decision, though out of pocket it made her.

A bit of investment for longer-term gain. A new concept.

Anyone asks about it, you didn't get it from me.

Yea, it fell off the back of a cart, right? I got it

She smirked at the blind man as she took the 'uniform' from him. It was perfect for her, albeit she could see by its styling that the uniform had once belonged to some shady organistion. She didn't care. A little stitch or two here and there and she could probably hide its origins. With that and those soft leather boots. She was now set. Took all her hard earned jink to buy them but she knew it was a good deal.

He could 'see' well enough. For one wearing blindfold he was awful adept at getting around using his other senses. His name was a bit odd, but then she was used to the oddness of the Cage now. Five years Sigil-side had acclimatised her to its peculiarities - such as the barmies like the wounded veteran sod Selmar, the teasings and nose-poking of ones like Benny-boy and the 'do-gooders' like that Emiko girl.

Take them or leave them, was all the same. She usually left them.

She put her trust in someone, if only for a bit. A first in a long time. Ironic really but the Captain was the first person she'd met in the Cage for a long while whose dry humour and ways caught her attention that she didn't immediately lash out and against with her sharp tongue. Perhaps only because they had found mutual and witty repartee at the expense of another. That had been enjoyable.

So here she was, standing back to back with the Captain as the pair fought off construct, intent on moving around this misty plane to acquire 'parts' for the jammer and its crew. Dodging metal mandible as the Captain threw grease buckets, no...it was magical spell, yea...grease magic onto the ground that made the metallic bugs turn upside down. After a while it became routine and entertaining to dance about them. Yea, it was interesting teamwork. Rare to find.

They made a deal. The Captain and her. A cursed belt and enchanted ring in exchange for help in the ethereal plane to get the parts for the ship.

"You can take all the loot found in the chests to the tower" She put trust again but the deal looked as if it was going to turn sour when the pair found all the chests empty. They both swore however "The buggers!" and doubt and scathing look turned to acceptance when she realised that the Captain had not been bluffing her, tricking her, had really expected the chests to have good pickings inside. Another had been there before them. The Captain and Rith were both pissed off alike.

So they came to new deal. The Captain still wanted the pieces she offered and gave Rith good coin in exchange. Rith went away planning to return to that plane and get more parts. This was a worthy contact to encourage for many reasons.
