Journal Entry 1

"Well blow me down with a feather"

I said that alot yesterday. The skirmish had gotten too hard, near surrounded, weapon had been hit out of my hand and I'd lost my pack. So when that portal appeared what was I to do but jump right through it. It was that or certain death. I was outnumbered. A moment before I'd jumped I had heard a shout behind, not the creatures attacking but a human voice but before I knew it I was sucked through to ...well...here.

I write this in journal as record. Never been one for journals before but this place is so strange I think it wise to note what I can and it might help as part of my training.

Squire. I finally found position as squire although that may only be as temporary until I, or we, can find the portal back again and reality will hit..and the man will realise he would rather have a young lad without my..without my issues to deal with. To think that I had to jump through a portal to some place called Sigil before someone would take me on. Best I keep that hidden and learn what I can, prove I am worthy of a knighthood despite it all. I doubt an Order on Toril would have taken me anyway but I still had hope that one day....Tyr in his ultimate sense of justice would help them find it in their hearts to look beyond the usual. So this Sir Rain...followed me through the portal having seen me in trouble ...and that is when I made the comment about the feather finding out in the ultimate coincidence that he was a paladin of Tyr!. After all my searching there was one right before me who had no qualm in saying yes to my suggestion...I am going to work my socks off to make this happen.

So. Sigil. A city like no other that I've seen before but a city is a city where'er it is. Just a few stranger faces and races than most from what I can see. People seem friendly and helpful enough. One man helped me with a gemstone, Raifael his name, that allowed me to help one lady find her way to the portal but we didnt' go through. He was searching for baskets but I'd seen none abouts. Bumped into a girl in the sewers who helped us out with training, Karal her name, but her half orc companion was rather odd - I didn't take to him much, but that is half-orcs for you. Very belly-food focused that one.

The bazaar was busy with merchants and despite having very little coin to my pocket we managed to find some armour and swords in both trade and with no little bit of goodwill from one beefy looking merchant to set us on our way in exchange for bringing him any monster pieces we might find....a very nice deal that one and I got a rather nice longsword from a gith creature...couldn't make out whether githyanki or githzerai so I just made the trade and kept my mouth shut on that so as not to offend - I never could tell them apart. That longsword was just the trick - it was good to have the feel of the steel in my hand again, much better than the sling the masked merchant was attempting to have me buy...a sling I mean, I ask you Journal..what self respecting knight of an Order would use a sling? I bought a simple bow later on where ranged shot might be called for.

Well, that will do for now Journal. A little rummaging around in basements and sewers reaped a few monetary rewards that will allow me to rent a room for some nights...and the squireship will help keep me in the direction I'd like to go for now.

Journal Entry 2

I've been too busy to write. Which is a good thing. Keeping oneself occupied to useful task, industrious and willing is good for the soul, not to mention my objective. But, I've never been one to stand idle.

If its not to cleaning armour, running errands, reading up on relevant facts and lore within the Hall of Records, its to help the city with pest clearing. The sewers are full of rodents, bugs and cretinous goblins.

I have not seen much of the knight Sir Rain at all so I wonder whether this squireship will continue. But it is a busy place, one that appears full of potential. I have hope that something will come out my time here...surely more promise in this plane than the one I came from - time will tell.

I perchanced to meet another knight. A stroke of luck when I noted the symbols he wore and eagerly took it upon myself to show him a little of the city. I am not sure if its a case of 'one door closing, another appearing to open' but I will be 'hedging my bets' . So, I kept a cheery grin on my face throughout, challenged another impolite fellow that passed our way who made unwarranted suggestions when the door to one 'cell' locked behind us (I had not been careful with the lock and the mechanism had slipped back) without any introduction and I pulled him up upon his rude manners. Not sure if I impressed Sir Toivonen at all, but I do not think my actions did me any discredit.

So journal, better leave it there, I promised to help the lady Muriel as her basement yet again is overrun and I know how she hates bats flying in her hair when she has to go down for more bottles and stock.

Journal Entry 3

I spent another night in the Hall of Records. I found a good book. It was dusty but in good order, looking like it had never been opened or barely. It does not surprise me in this city. Those that come here of the same ideals, likely already know their path and objectives, already knighted, belonging, the code ground into their being and have no need to read upon their words from parchment again. Not I. So I was pleased to find this item amongst a number of religious tomes.

The Code Of a Paladin

As I read I took quill to these pages to mark those virtues, that code, to list and noteÂ…what I have to be aware of, to do and how I progress. Whether I hold position of squire or no, I must adhere to these tenets or so Tyr will judge me.

I must not defy the code, I shall not exist as I wish to without this code, tis the heart and mind of what I wish to be, my guide, my cornerstoneÂ…I am the CodeÂ…alright, alright journalÂ….semanticsÂ…I will be the code..once I am sure of my squireship and knighthood, or is that squirehood and knightship?

Let me see how I think I rate myself at this point:

Honor – average. I helped a few recently to show some about the city and held back on saying a swear word when dealing with that mad gnoll.
Honesty – I do not lie, well rarely – on one subject I just avoid, so is that lying? You can lie by omission but not talking of something doesn’t count does it? White ones in the past I’ve made but I think I can easily keep that one from here on. I haven’t made any promises as yet to worry over keeping, only ones to myself and those I will.
Valor – no great opportunity to demonstrate this yet. I stood up to face the goblins and some worm like creatures in the sewers bravely enough without retreating but I am not sure that really counts – early days though.
Humility – seeing as I am pretty rubbish at everything but running errands just now I have nothing to boast about. Done. Must keep an eye on the swearing and try to lose that habit. The lads back home are to thank for that. Taught me some tricks but that one, won’t cut the mustard if I am to make it to knighthood.
Courtesy – I think I am polite and respectful to all, or to those deserving so no issue there. As for being chivalrous and courteous, think I need some instruction on the practical aspects of those. On my 'to learn' list. I mean, are we talking of such acts as laying down a cloak on a puddle for a lady as being courteous act?…because, I do not wear cloak…should I go buy one just for that? Lots of questions.
Selflessness – again not had great opportunity to demonstrate this. But as I’ve little to my pocket just now, I cannot easily afford to give too much away to those more needy. Tricky one that. I really would like to save enough for that special sword I know is out there waiting for me. I will have to watch my desire on that one – to balance my yearning for that versus the application of this tenet.
Fealty – In my heart I am bound to Tyr though I have not pledged in temple or church or in front of others yet my fealty to him. It will be done.
Faith – Faith in the code…well…this is a start is it not? Long way to go Journal. But Beth will get there mark my words!

Journal Entry 3 ii

Oh heck journal, I forgot to list two others:

Industry – I keep busy, no question. This one will be easy.
Chastity –Do not see any problem on this one. No time to thinking of lads in that way, rather share an ale and joke instead. Done or will be done.

Right time for some kip. Night night journal.

Journal Entry 4

It was my good fortune to bump into one good man who was able to sell me a few used but useful pieces of equipment at reasonable price (I did not wish to spend small fortune where coin is lacking and where I would hold my spare gold for that special sword). So, twas a bonus for sure when Sir Parolus accepted books and a few gems in exchange for a rather nice shield, circlet and boots. But it was those winged boots that really caught my eye - his talk of the Lord Bahamut too gave me pause for thought.

The one sword he showed me I told him to be rid of, or keep safe and tell few. I think he meant to sell or give it even hearing my proposal but I have no use for the evil in such a piece nor am I strong enough yet to guard and keep it safe until I could destroy it. I hope he does not show it to many in case of foul play before he can destroy it himself.

Equipment so far for my own record:
Shield - of the second circle of enchantment, heavy, decent
Sword - simple Astral longsword, of single enchantment - I keep looking for that special one
Armour - half plate of fourth circle of enchantment, I should like to find full plate in time
Circlet - helps immensely to strengthen my mind and resolve
Boots - made of dragon scales, resistant to magics to a degree, I admit to rather liking them upon my feet, a small sign of vanity or desire I must be careful to curb, but the connection Journal, I find interesting.

I caught up with that large crafter merchant man, the one who had helped me by providing some basic armour on my first day in Sigil and I gave to him a number of monster parts that I had found. My dues are now paid on that score.

I will end it here, nothing much more of consequence passed this day to note.

Journal Entry 5

I found some more of those creature parts that a number of enchanters seem to be craving. There is some value in hanging on to those methinks. This time, I kept them in a bag to avoid spoiling the armour up to the point I handed them over to Sir Parolus, who I saw standing in the bazaar, offering up another book I had found. I had no time to read it but he seemed keen to take it off my hands. His need seemed greater than mine and my desire for the gold he provided to put towards my private quest easily swayed me - a mutual arrangement that seemed to suit both parties.

I took a moment to look at afew other things he had up for sale - all fine pieces but I am determined not to spend on anything more equipment-wise until I set eyes upon that dream sword. I only hope, temptation does not get the better of me, or I will never keep on the right path.

Journal Entry 6

*the entry on this page is nothing but a doodle of what looks to be a large sword with bulb for pommel, long grip, swirling engravings adorning the rain guard plate above the cross guard and long diamond cross-sectioned blade leading to sharp point. The pencilled markings of the engravings are a little smudged, but one could make out the form of an slanted 'eye' with dark vertical slit for its pupil*

Journal Entry 7

Found a wererat lair exploring with a halfling named Boddo and nearly came to a sticky end. Close call. I told him to run when it seemed we were surrounded, backed slowly towards the stairway up to safer tunnel trying to hold the remaining ones off of him. We got out - just.

But, I was utterly exhausted and was probably making no sense to anyone after that, dirt and blood streaking cheek and armour. After a good sleep, remembering back to things, I fear I told an untruth to Sir Marcus speaking of a wereWOLF lair instead of rats. Heck. An untruth - got to do better and not let the tiredness get to me. Now he will think I'm a teller of tall tales and porkies.

I heard from the first knight, Sir Rain, he fairs well but I see him now but rarely and in letter we agreed to end that potential squirehood and I managed to find Sir Marcus to ask if his offer was still open. It was. Squire Beth I am now. He took me on word and trust with minimal question (I am partly thankful for that) but I might still swear oath to Tyr in front of him anyway, to show my faith and goodwill.

Why did I want to become a Knight of Tyr? it was a good question, a valid one but I was dead on my feet, or bottom rather, for I was sitting supping stew and ale at the time and I fear my answer was less than adequate. He didn't seem to mind too much.

After one last errand and a brief conversation with another that smacked off the fellow's dissatisfaction with the fairer sex and their 'typical' overreaction (I write' typical' with a wry smile for I don't place myself quite in the same box and tended towards sympathy if he spoke truth), I made it to bed, shucked dirty armour vowing to clean it up extra well in the morning as I really had no energy to complete that task in the end. Shirking a duty and care? Perhaps, I'll try to do better Journal, but it had been an awfully busy day.

Journal Entry 8

Not sure what to write.

A harsh lesson learned yesterday luckily without incident but it could have been alot worse. I was blinded by desire for a better blade and did not see what was in front of my nose - saw the dark mask but did not think to check further. Lucky for me the knight who trains me has better awareness of things and pulled me up on my lack of good sense in that respect. Not only that, when I persisted in challenging and questioning his own sense of duty to my care as his squire I got ordered to silence - I didn't like that Journal. But I did shut up and took the lesson as it was intended, in good faith - punched my pillow later that night I have to confess. We shared an ale before that however and I think mutual respect still stands.

After good inspection and test, I feel the blade not to be tainted by its previous dubious ownership and it settles nicely to my hand. It is not 'the one' but is a particularly good longsword - just a shame I had to acquire it in less than ideal circumstances.

I am sure there are harder lessons than that to work through before I make it to knighthood. I will NOT mess up this chance - it has been a long time in coming. The change is upon me too now and I will soon have to take steps to hide it. I did not expect it so soon.

Journal Entry 9

I have not felt like putting quill to pages for a very long while and I do not really have time now either. But I'm excited so here goes.

I have a new position as squire, starting today. Still a bit dazed about it. Lots to think about. Will write more in due course. For now I have to unpack and get freshened up, dinner is at 5 and I do not want to be late, making bad impression on my first day.

Squire Beth is going to make knighthood yet!
