The Tiefling slammed into the door of the run down house and burst into the dirty street. He had been running for about 2 weeks since being found guilty for the robbing, and subsequent murder, of the shopkeeper on Blan Street in the Foundry District. He had been tried in absentia after managing to break out of his cell while being held for trial. Since that day he had been moving from hostel to hovel, planar gate to planar gate... all the while trying to shake an unknown, but very real, presence that had been pursuing him. The Red Death had ordered his execution as punishment for his heinous crimes. Although he managed to escape his bonds... he wouldn't escape rightful justice.

He stumbled onto the street and tried to get the help of passersby. All ignored his pleas and continued on their way. In this area of the district most kept to themselves. Everyone had secrets to hide and it was best if they shared them as little as possible. He fled down a long alley before realizing it had no exit. Moving quickly he concealed himself in a pile of rubble and tried to remain as quiet as possible. Several moments passed before he heard someone clear their throat.

"Ahem.." said the voice. He peered out from his hiding place to see a tall man, armed with two flaming blades and dressed in the armour of a Mercykiller, standing to one side of the narrow alley. " What do you plan to do now, criminal?" he was asked. He didn't even wait to form a reply before he made a run for the end of the alley. three steps... that's all he made before the first trap fired off. a flash of magic reduced his speed by half. It was almost as if the world doubled in speed yet he remained as he was. Still... he pushed on. Two more traps fired before he came to a complete stop. He was literally motionless now. He stood for several seconds before the Mercykiller stepped in front of him and looked him in the eye. The Mercykillers eyes were cold... emotionless. His were terrified.

"Gavin Mandkinn..." the Mercykiller began, "you have been found guilty of capital murder and robbery by the high courts. The Mercykillers, in their infinite wisdom on all matters of justice, has decided your sentence for these crimes will be execution. My task, criminal, is to carry that sentence out. May justice cleanse your soul".

Almost instantly a blade flashed and entered the Tieflings chest, its tip exiting through his back. It only took a few seconds for the murderer to die. The Mercykiller removed the blade, cleaned it off and sheathed it. He took out a small book and wrote a few lines on one of its pages. The book was stowed, once agin, in his pack and a small pouch of powder was produced. It was sprinkled over the corpse and then lit on fire. The body ignited and rapidly burned, taking only a few short moments to completely disintigrate. He then stepped out into the street and quickly made his way back to the Lady's district.

Adam Winters had closed another task and sealed another file. He had grown good at his job. His tracking skills were matched by few and his persistance was becoming well known throughout the ranks of his peers. He would go far in his profession... well... as far as he wished. He would never be a desk jockey. His was the hunt. His was the kill. Not for love of death... but for love of justice...

It had begun like a regular bounty. I had tracked the Gith, Ku'tlek'chon the slayer, to a rundown tavern in the Hive. He had managed to elude the Red Death for a few cycles and they had placed a bounty on his head in return. I still had enough connections in the prison to catch wind of it and.. well.. the pay was good.

The Gith was a smart one but he was arrogant... and that arrogance cost him dearly. He made a few mistakes that allowed me to pinpoint his location... surprisingly enough... quite easily. Gaining entrance to the dive was simple enough... what happened next, however, is where things got a little crazy.

I had just entered the place when I was immediately greeted by a group of dark, armoured, individuals. It appeared that they intended to confront someone within. This kind of sidelined my main intent... but an agreement was quickly hammered out. I was to get my bounty and would help them as required. A foul darkness was their target. Good enough for me...

The Gith, after much bravado, didn't put up much of a fight. I suppose he didn't expect a professional executioner to come visiting. Decided to take me on alone. That made things easy. until...

She appeared of shadow and darkness from behind the bar. Taunting and threatening. Her associate.. or slave... whatever he was... was alongside her. The groups target. A few words were exchanged before the other mage let loose. She skulked away during the melee...

Something familiar about her... dangerously familiar...

After defeating a barrage of demon and thug alike I took my leave. The initial groups leader, one "Nemesis", shook my hand and allowed me to leave uninhibited.

Bounty in hand I left for the Lady's to collect payment. I'm most certain I haven't heard the last of any of this... something tells me it's not gone for good...

After surviving Sigil and the connected planes for twenty eight seasons of training Adam had met a grisly end. Attacked in the night while pursuing justice. Crucified... brutalized... disfigured... killed. His soul completely destroyed. He was no more.

He will be missed by few due to his penchant for keeping people at arms length... but those who did grow close to him... will remember him fondly.

Adam Winters, Mercykiller.
